I just realized in this movie, that the patriotism felt by the characters, no matter what the motives are, drives them to sacrifice people they love. I've always focused on Devlin and Alicia and their ideals, but Alex is willing to sacrifice Alicia for his. Makes me realize what we're up against even now.
