5. Has the pattern given you areas where you are to decrease or increase?

First, does the pattern have you crochet from the top down or the bottom up? If it's top down, you should be adding stitches in each row for a while. If it's bottom up, you would be decreasing stitches by crocheting 2 together at some point.

If you want to PM me the pattern and a photo of your hat, I'll take a look. I will tell you though that many patterns, esp free ones, have errors and/or are written in such a way as to be hard to follow.
