DJT came out against them, but I think he's actually reflecting from his base on this one.
For months social media has been bombarded by big burly men who would never own an EV. In any posting about EVs they pop up to spout well worn talking points about how impractical they are, how they catch fire, and we don't have the infrastructure to maintain them anyway. If I didn't know better, I'd say the majority are AI bots scanning for key words and phrases to deliver their anti-EV rhetoric.
And it's caught on politically. Now most posts are from MAGAs blaming Joe Biden for "shoving them down our throats", as if he's in charge of what global auto manufacturers build. These Boomer MAGA knucleheads are demanding Detroit go back to building 1970 GTOs. "Because that's what people want".
And it seems to be working. After an enthusiastic start, EV sales have bottomed out recently with dealers refusing them, lest they grow old on the lot.
But who's washing those already bleached out brains of motorheads who'd rather die than give up the pump? Who would employ bots to ravage social media with lies and innuendo about clean emission automobiles? Who could it be? We'll probably never know.
There's a commercial that runs here during the late shows. It spews all the anti-EV points seen on Facebook and other sites, that there's no infrastructure and they are too dangerous to carry loved ones, and that Biden is forcing YOU to give up your car for an electric emasculating machine.

(19,382 posts)I mean thats not an unreasonable response. In fact, many Americans agree with this and not just MAGA. Were looking at 20 years and electric cars will be the most cars drive .

Many of my Progressive friends are driving Hybrids or EVs. As far as car payments, not much difference from what they were driving then.

(12,062 posts)We sold more EVs in 2023 than 2022, a record 1.2 million. We'll also sell more in 2024 than 2023.
The only thing that's "slowing" is the rate of increase. Part of that may be people's reluctance to buy EVs for whatever reason, some of it may be high interest rates impacting the auto industry as a whole. Who knows.
But overall, EV sales are still going up. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

(6,640 posts)I came here to say exactly this. Every time an EV-related article gets posted it's full of nay-sayer posters who swear they're all for EVs but, gosh, they're just not practical right now.
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...about practically every type of non-CO2 emitting energy technology.
tinrobot
(12,062 posts)They are practical if you can afford them and can charge at home. I've owned 5 EVs since I bought my first one in 2010, and it's a great way to drive. I'll never go back to gas. But then, I can afford a $40-50K vehicle and I have a house with a garage. Not everyone has those resources.
So, if someone says they're not practical because they're too expensive or there's not enough charging - I'll believe them.
We need to get prices down and we need a LOT more charging before everyone can buy and drive one. We are getting very close, hopefully EVs will get to that tipping point within the next few years.

(24,989 posts)I will see multiple posters complain about their price, swear they will never be forced to buy one, and bring up all kinds of hypothetical EV failures.
kysrsoze
(6,446 posts)Prices are dropping, there are generous tax rebates and the cost of powering them is much less than gas. Much less maintenance as well. People who claim theyre too expensive dont understand math. A gas powered car is also 50 times more likely to catch fire than a EV. The only valid argument against them is when people live in a very cold climate and cant charge at home.
Once solid state batteries hit the market and infrastructure build-out matures, gas/diesel cars will phase out. China and India have also mandated the switch. Its a done deal.

A second threat similar to another the week prior has been made at a construction site in Hardin County.
According to Hardin County Deputy Sheriff David Lee, around 10 a.m. on Thursday, a threat was found written on the wall of a port-a-potty on the BlueOval SK construction site in Glendale. The building has been evacuated, but employees were not told to leave the property and a search of the building was handled internally by plant officials.
Deputies say BlueOval called back around noon saying they found a "device," a bag with wires coming out of it attached to electronic equipment. When the device was found, police say the company sent employees home. Hardin County Sheriff's Office and Kentucky State Police responded to the report. A bomb expert determined the wiring was part of Christmas tree lights and the device was not a threat. Officials then gave the "all clear" for the facility.
Just last week, nearly the same threat was made. A message was found on a porta-potty inspection sheet that said a bomb would go off that day. Nothing was found. The EV battery park project in Glendale is the largest economic development project in Kentucky history. Side-by-side plants will make batteries for Ford vehicles. The $5.8 billion investment from parent companies Ford and SK will create 5,000 jobs in the state. Production is scheduled to begin next year.
