'Active shooter' reported at FSU, hospital receives patients: Live updates

An active shooter was reported on Florida State University's campus in Tallahassee, according to an alert sent from the university. A local hospital said in a statement it is caring for multiple people injured in the attack.

"An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union. Police are on the scene or on the way, Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures," the text message alert reads.

The Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network, attempted to contact the campus police department but they could not be reached. Tallahassee Police Department spokesperson Lt. Damon Miller directed inquiries to university police.

5. Happened to our family.

My college freshman daughter was in the near vicinity of an active campus shooter.
All the parents were sent a text alert.

I called my daughter who was a bit in shock as she walked to class right near the shooter
according to the text I received.

She had just started college and didn't want to be late for class.

I told her to get to the nearest building to seek shelter.
She frantically ran from building to building, but doors were all locked.
I told her to hide in the bushes if need be.
She finally did find an open door.

She was the last person in and the kids barricaded all the doors.
Stacked up all the chairs and desks on the doors.

Rigged up communication with their laptops and lecture screens to get updates.

I cannot tell you how this all felt to me as a parent, two hours away from campus.

Eleven students/professors were injured. Police killed the perpetrator on the spot.
