It's unbelievable but statements like "they're eating the pets" work on those conditioned to believe in the authority of such leaders. Fear is primarily what is feeding Trump's electoral power among his supporters. Remove that fear and the GOP loses quite a bit of power, though it will still have its support of traditional cultural values to fall back on.
