First off, its the worst kept secret that corporations like Starbucks use this deceptive practice to pay their employees their wage not as a supplement to their already low wages.
Second, you know Motherfucker Krasnovs lie about not taxing tips? Are we connecting the dots on that grift? Yeah, because I did and fuck him.
Finally, if you want to tip, carry some ones and fives and put them in tip jars. The employees really appreciate it and will extend all sorts of extra courtesies because they know you know.

(834 posts)Are you saying that when we give electronic tips, the full amount does not go to the employees?
Worst kept corporate secret.

(2,806 posts)I almost never use cash but do carry a little and will start popping it into the tip jars.
This answers the question of why, in a region where cash isn't used a lot, the tip jars ALWAYS have it.

(5,195 posts)it, but thanks for confirming.
My tips on our footlong tunas with pepperjack on Italian herb, varies, depending on whether they scrape those tiny scoops, flat. But now I know to carry some cash (I never do) to make sure it all goes to whom it should.
What gets me are the places where u have to pay up front before you get your food.

(71,132 posts)you generally don't tip to buy a movie ticket or buy a car.
Food however, especially in a restaurant, is different because it includes the possibility that the quality of your food may (or may not be) influenced by the amount you tip.
I am of the (growingly diminishing) old school of thought that still holds that the amount (percentage) one tips should not be determined by edict, but a reflection of appreciation for the quality of service rendered.
