An estimated 2,000 people showed up Saturday afternoon at Omaha's Gene Leahy Mall as part of the "Hands Off!" protests that occurred across the country against President Donald Trump's policies.
The Omaha event was coordinated by a group known as 50501. The name 50501 refers to the groups goal of 50 states, 50 protests, 1 movement.
According to a list published online by the group, Saturdays day of action saw nearly 700 events nationwide aimed at rallying voters. The first 50501 protests occurred on Feb. 5, as "a decentralized rapid response to the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies," its website said.
Speakers at the Omaha protest said they were calling on Trump and Elon Musk to take their hands off the programs that middle class and working families rely on and asking elected officials to take a stand. Some Omaha protestors said Saturday that they were heartened by the Supreme Court's decision on Friday night that at least temporarily halted the Trump administration from deporting immigrants under the Aliens Act of 1798.

(39,868 posts)2. that's a good showing
for a small=mid-sized city like Omaha.
Of course, they do have substantial academic institutions there and Omaha is a major medical center. It wouldn't surprise me if many of the protestors were researchers who have been cut out of grants or have them in litigation.
