Trump touts new legal path for "great" undocumented people

Trump touts new legal path for "great" undocumented people
https://www.axios.com/2025/04/15/trump-legal-pathway-undocumented-immigration

President Trump pitched a path to legal status for "great people" who are undocumented immigrants in an interview with Fox Noticias on Tuesday.

Why it matters: Trump's informal proposal would help create a pathway to living in the U.S. legally for people who self-deport and have an employer supporting their return.

I'm guessing MAGAs will be screaming betrayal.

He may yet repackage Biden and claim it as his own.

In a shift from his earlier hardline immigration stance, Trump said the current focus is on deporting “murderers” and that others in the country without legal status would be encouraged to leave on their own with assistance. “We're going to give them a stipend. We're going to give them some money and a plane ticket, and then we're going to work with them — if they're good — if we want them back in, we're going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can,” Trump said during the taped interview.

The details of the proposed program, including implementation timeline and criteria for eligibility, were not specified.

Responding to the clip, Trump said, “I look at this man. I say, this is a guy that we want to keep,” and added, “I'll probably take heat for saying it.” He also stated, “I don't think he's in any danger of it,” when asked about the man’s deportation status.

Trump further mentioned the need to support sectors like agriculture and hospitality by helping them find suitable workers. “We’re doing a self-deportation and we’re going to make it comfortable for people,” he said. “And we’re going to work with those people to come back into our country legally.”

(a)No, they'll never give immigrants a "stipend" (which is defined as a regular income). It's just a word someone mentioned in Trump's hearing, and he thought it sounded professional. They might pay for the plane ticket, but that'll be it.
(b)It starts by expelling the immigrants. Then they have to try and get back in, which does not depend on their personal circumstances (eg having a family in the USA), but having an employer willing to go through whatever process his regime decides to set up (which could easily include the employer paying, or an extra tax on the employee's wages after they're back). So those in casual employment, self-employed, or with an employer not willing to go the extra mile for them, are shit out of luck, and already outside the USA.
