Hours before his death on Monday at the age of 88, Pope Francis, who led the Roman Catholic Church for over a decade, made a final post on X, formerly Twitter, about the meaning of life.
"Christ is risen! This proclamation contains the entire meaning of our existence, which is not made for death but for life. #Easter," the pope wrote on his Spanish-language account, on Easter Sunday.
Why It Matters
The tweet was posted on Easter Sunday, less than 24 hours before Pope Francis' death. It was one of several messages the Pope shared on his official X accounts during the holiday, emphasizing themes of resurrection, peace, and renewal.
Francis died at 7:35 a.m. on Easter Monday in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, according to the Holy See. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced his death, stating, "His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church."

The fact we exist at all is a miracle.

Be at peace, Pope Francis. I can only hope that your replacement can somehow pose a counter to the worldwide threats posed by the rise of extremist RWers, authoritarians, and hate-traffickers, including Trump.

(18,404 posts)death on BBC World Service. I think most of the day will be devoted to this. Even though I really, really liked Pope Francis, I'm learning all these things I didn't know and it's even more poignant. This was a really, really good man. I think it strikes me more partly because of the timing, losing a really good person when most of our news coverage is devoted to awful, horrendous people who rejoice in destruction.
Just sad but also tremendously inspiring.

(109,274 posts)prior with the Pope's "second" and that is where he clearly got a harsh lesson on what Catholicism actually teaches about the poor and immigrants. The Easter message of Pope Francis (delivered again by his aid) was likewise a "lesson" on immigrantion.
So, there is probably mostly truth in the technicalities...
