Hakeem Jeffries makes it clear he'll stand by incumbent House Dems

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday pushed back on David Hogg’s effort to fund primary challengers against select Democrats in deep blue seats, arguing in favor of a more efficient allocation of party resources.

“Here’s the thing,” Jeffries told Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week.” “I’m gonna really focus on trying to defeat Republican incumbents so we can take back control of the House of Representatives and begin the process of ending this national nightmare that’s being visited upon us by far-right extremism.”

Leaders We Deserve, an organization co-founded by Hogg, now the Democratic National Committee vice chair, last week said it would shell out $20 million to younger, more progressive challengers of Democratic incumbents in safe blue seats.

The resultant schism has pitted Hogg and allies looking to inject fresh faces and enthusiasm into the party against key Democrats and insiders who are preaching unity and believe that money could be spent on winning back the House majority.

2. Minority leader Jeffries also did this when the Justice Democrats were seeking to primary real democrats

This is not the first time that Minority Leader Jeffries have defended real democrats against groups like the Justice Democrats.
See https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=2871462

To some degree, Hogg's efforts remind me of the efforts of the Justice Democrats who sought to destroy and remake the Democratic Party. Minority Leader Jeffries led efforts back then to defeat primary challenges from the Justice Democrats and it is appropriate for Minority Leader to protect real democratic incumbents from primary challenges.

I am still not a fan of the Justice Democrat group and I will not support Hogg's efforts. Hogg may be using the Justice Democrat mailing list because I have received at least six emails from Hogg asking for money.

8. As an executive member of the DNC, Hogg should not be taking positions in primaries

I know that county and state parties are generally prohibited from getting involved in primary contests and that all of the members of the DNC other than Mr. Hogg have signed a pledge not to get involved in primaries. If Mr. Hogg wants to do this, he should resign from the DNC

Donna Brazil on David Hogg

“Officers of the DNC have signed a neutrality pledge. David did not sign…”

“My position as many of these so-called safe blue seats are seats that women and minorities finally had an opportunity to come and sit in because there were no seats at the table for us. So before you start wiping clean the menu and the plates and the seats, be very careful because many of those seats are in seats where we are.”

DNC Chair Ken Martin said in a statement that “Hogg is a passionate advocate and we are grateful for his service to the Democratic Party, whether it be in his role as a DNC Vice Chair or in an outside capacity.”

“In order to ensure we are as effective as possible at electing Democrats to office, it is the DNC’s longstanding position that primary voters — not the national party — determine their Democratic candidates for the general election,” Martin continued.

All DNC officers have been asked to avoid activities in their party or personal capacity that would raise questions about their impartiality, but Hogg was the one DNC leader who did not sign the “neutrality policy.”

I disagree with the concept that Hogg should be given an exemption from the normal DNC requirement.

A friend and I also got several emails from dh right after I told him about this. I think dh must be using the Democratic mailing list too. I still get emails from lots even though I unsubscribed to all of them. So I put them in my junk folder and that works even better.

I will be donating to any candidates that dh attempts to primary.

I agree with Minority Leader Jeffries

Jeffries: Well, I look forward to standing behind every single Democratic incumbent, from the most progressive, to the most centrist, and all points in between. They're working hard in their communities, rising to the occasion this past week. We had, of course, Medicaid Matters Day of Action, a save Social Security Day of Action, and we have to continue to do all of the things -- rallies, town hall meetings in Democratic districts, town hall meetings in Republican districts, days of action, telephone town hall meetings, site visits, press conferences. We are in a more is more environment and more is going to continue to be required of all of us. Now, the House is the institution that is known to be -- was built to be the closest to the American people. That's why we have elections every two years. Primaries are a fact of life.

But here's the thing: I'm going to really focus on trying to defeat Republican incumbents so we can take back control of the House of Representatives and begin the process of ending this national nightmare that's being visited upon us by far-right extremism.

isn’t that what is called democracy?

This fixation on incumbency is really bizarre. Elections should matter and be the consequence of the work the incumbent is doing for their constituents.
