April 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he will attend Pope Francis' funeral in Rome.

"Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome," Trump said on Truth Social.

And notice how his in-person announcement focused only slightly, only perfunctorily, on the Pope himself ("a good man" ) but, in order to insert himself into the equation, had to announce that he was having all flags ("federal, and state too" ) flags flown at half-mast, as if that was required. Not much of a hagiography especially coompared to the statements said by real leaders in other countries who embellished their remarks with comments about the impact Pope Francis had on them and society. Trump is incapable of even thinking such things, let alone utter them.

But at least he'll have another chance to pal it up with Giorgia Meloni (another hard-right politician referred to as "the italian trump," ) who, not surprisingly, was also the only EU leader invited to trump's inauguration.
