Universities cutting dozens of majors after Utah law requires deep budget cuts

Last edited Wed Apr 23, 2025, 05:23 PM - Edit history (1)

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Utah State University became the first school in the state to announce its plans to cut more than two dozen academic programs under legislative-mandated budgets for public higher education institutions.

***snip***

It comes after a new state law, HB 265, or Higher Education Strategic Reinvestment, required schools to make deep cuts. Nearly $60 million in funding was slashed from all degree-earning institutions.

“It’s just a nervous, like feeling of impending doom, almost you don’t know what is going to happen in the future,” Jacob Neely, a student at the University of Utah, said.

"I am worried about my friends. I am a biology [major] but I have a lot of friends who are atmospheric science majors, which are not very common," she said.

You don’t have to stay in Utah if can’t get the education you want.

North Carolina has forced UNC system schools to cut majors and programs.

And if a student transfers to a private school or goes out of state, they will pay much higher tuition and other costs. Meaning they graduate with more debt.

Utah State University plans to cut 14 majors, including engineering, public health, and elementary education, while the University of Utah is looking to possibly cut mining, metallurgical, and geological engineering programs.

They told KUTV 2News they are looking at cutting programs that have less than 40 students enrolled.

In North Carolina, cuts to UNC system schools were based on a very stupid review, similar to Musk's slash and burn approach.

Maybe there aren't a lot of students enrolled in Philosophy classes at any one time, but that's not a good reason to cut an entire department that is core to a liberal arts education.

I'm all for cutting waste and making wise choices, but the GOP is not interested in that. They're interested in imposing their ideology. Which, I've noticed, is based on urban legends, greed, ignorance, and sexual hangups.

I believe those are all important majors, but if people aren't taking them, it isn't relevant. The fields of study that interest students at any given time isn't a constant.
