On Tuesday I got an email from SSA that my new statement is ready. It will be easy to read and understand. I tried to sign in. Got the code & it didn't work. I was told to try later. It had me worried about my April benefit deposit. I got it the next day, but I will not forget the cruelty and worry this caused me. musk & trump are rich. What do they care?

(6,279 posts)it could be a scam anyway. Never click on anything in an email.

(10,771 posts)They don't care about the damage they are doing to the planet. They only care about making themselves richer and more powerful.

(27,771 posts)communicated via US mail. Not by phone, not by email. I hear from them once a year, each December, when they send me a statement telling me what my benefit will be for the coming year.
Are you sure that email really and truly came from the United States Social Security Administration?

(113,544 posts)It is insanity. All under the guise of "waste, fraud, and abuse". What they don't tell you is that it is they that are engaging in "waste, fraud, and abuse."
Whatever we did, this is some hellacious karma.

(3,986 posts)I've been formally retired since October 2024 and I seem to get a different amount every month. I get a letter telling me they've given me this extra, or taken that because (whatever), but none of it makes any sense.
I went in to my local office (and only waited an hour (!)), but they weren't able to give me a definitive reason for the one thing that really bothered me, a part of a letter which said they'd withheld some amount because of "late" something else. As far as I know nothing has been late. They said they'd research it and send yet another letter.
They've been very helpful on most occasions.
Don't try to call them though. I was three hours waiting on the phone before deciding to try my luck in the office.

(27,771 posts)And did that email explain why?
I guess I'm completely befuddled because my Social Security has always been quite secure.
I started by collecting from my ex-husband's account, starting when I was 66 (and he'd turned 62), and then when I turned 70 I collected from my own account. I expect if my ex dies before I do, I'll get the larger widow's account. Lucky me, if that happens.
I do hope your situation gets resolved.

(7,714 posts)In fact it's worse than not caring. They resent all that money being "given" to the elderly, even though it's their money.
Their view is that it's a bank just waiting to be robbed.

(113,251 posts)but I live in an independent and assisted living facility where most people do, it's the difference between affording a place where help is available if they need it versus being in a studio apartment where it is not. Social Security in combination with what they managed to save/invest allows them safety and dignity.
That's what you're paying those premiums for, younger people. Please don't allow dogmatic and ignorant Republicans to get their grabby hands on it. While the trend of the stock market has historically risen, it can also go down and stay down for prolonged periods. Social Security is not an investment, it's insurance. Pay the premiums and live long enough, it will pay out. Never forget the difference but good luck explaining it to a cement skulled and dogmatic Republican.
