Abortion bans are influencing decisions about where to live and work. Many individualsparticularly those interested in having children in the near futureare either leaving abortion-restrictive states or refusing to take jobs there. The resulting talent shortages in states with abortion bans reveal that abortion access is not just a political, legal, or moral issue. Reproductive rights are a business concern.
Among adults ages 18 to 34, 15% said they had relocated (or know someone who has), and 14% said they had applied for an out-of-state job (or know someone who has), because of state abortion bans. Among adults who are planning to have children within the next ten years, 18% said they had relocated (or know someone who has), and 19% said they had applied for an out-of-state job (or knew someone who has), because of state abortion bans.
In other words, the individuals most likely to be active in the workforce, starting families, and making long-term economic contributions are also the ones leaving states with abortion restrictions, according to the IWPR report.

Over 60% of people ages 18 to 25 said they would definitely not or probably not live in a state that bans abortion, according to a 2024 CNBC and Generation Lab nationwide survey of over 1,000 Americans. Nearly half of those surveyed (45%) said they would either definitely reject or probably reject a job offer in a state where abortion is illegal.

This is not surprising. These State's are not safe enviornments for women of reproductive age. These State's are not safe environments for women to start a family in.

(10,354 posts)2. Agree. Endangering the welfare of over half your population
and having pandering politicians make life and death healthcare decisions rather than the patient and the doctor is poison for a successful state.
These states are reaping their harvest of stupidity.

(2,874 posts)4. I wish they could do the census over again
after the populations are decimated in Red states. They will continue to have the representation they had before the abortion bans, despite having fewer people, for a decade.
And the Senate just gets worse than it already is
I wish this would make them reconsider their abortion policies. But instead, I think they'll just become Redder with Dems and young people leaving.
