In the past 48 hours I have experienced one ugly demon nightmare from hell that was cured by the wonderful community at DU.
I am traveling cross country, relocating, and am loaded up with a good sized rental truck with my car on a trailer. Saturday night, as I was trying to find a fuel stop I managed to lose my wallet at a place where I wasn't able to get diesel. I used the restroom and I guess I was so tired I left my wallet on the back of the commode. The great good fortune was that I was the last one to use the rest room before closing and it was found by an employee. Through a series of events, after discovering the loss at the pumps 30 miles down the road, I ended up another 40 miles further away, a long story. All I can say is, Penske is the best rental service, period.
When morning came I had made contact with a friend who secured a room for me so I could get some rest. While I was sleeping the phone rang and it was the manager of the gas station informing me that he had my wallet!
Great! except it's 70 miles back and the rig only goes 67mph and the roads are rough in Illinois with lots of construction, would have been a hard drive up and back. So I remembered that DU always comes to the rescue so I set up my laptop and made a plea to the folks on the Illinois page and in a very short time I had 2 DUers with male family members show up to help me unload my car so I could drive it to get my wallet!! And one came back upon my return to help reload!!
How awesome is that? If not for DU, I'd be in a world of hurt.
So I am extending a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all the DUers who helped me contact those helpers and especially those who came out to help!
Now I'm going to get offline and clear out of here and get rolling again, before I'm late.

(62,875 posts)you when you were vulnerable, even though they knew they were all going to die eventually anyway! And they didn't even need to call upon the toothfairy. Pretty amazing, isn't it? Good on those DUers and everyone who helped.
Let's remind Joanie Ernst what good people do, no matter what their religious beliefs are.

(11 posts)I finished up my education major and Masters there, met my wife at Illinois State, and taught in the area for 7 years! Richest farmland and friendly people! We had our first two children there and then three of my four went to Illinois Wesleyan in that great town. You picked a good place to lose your wallet!

(10,087 posts)Its a double whammy or more when bad things happen on the road, IMO. When good things happen, the pendulum swings equally the other way.
The stars were certainly shining in your favour. Hats off to those DU road masters who were able to answer the call and good luck in your new situation!

I too, know that feeling of being alone with no one to call on but having DU as the lighthouse in the storm.
I saw your post requesting help but didn't know what to do. I'm so glad others came through for you and you are now merrily on your way again.

(19,121 posts)Or maybe I just missed your posts. Knew you were relocating, but had no idea it was right NOW!
I'm so glad you could get some assistance - yep DU is the best. It must have been incredibly unsettling to think you had lost your wallet while on the road, and truly excellent news that it was returned to you. There are still trustworthy folk around - more than many people think.
Looking forward to hearing more about the move when you are settled. Sending my best vibes....

(10,675 posts)Over the years, after a terrible loss, there always seemed a way to lick our wounds and eventually fight back.
What has been going on with Trump has been more difficult to handle because it seems so hard to fight back in a meaningful way.
It is very frustrating - more than I can express. The awful things happening are very, very hard to take. I can't stand suffering - never could. Many of the things we fought for are at risk or in progress of being taken away.
There has been one thing that has given me some significant relief every day. It keeps me informed. It soothes some my wounds. It eases some my worries. Provide some humor. I see members taking care of each other. It assures me I am not alone. etc.

(4,308 posts)You had quite some string nightmare predicaments there. You are so fortunate, that it worked out in your favor. Losing a wallet is always a nightmare, just thinking about about that happening, makes me panic. Glad you thought of calling DU, it's an amazing group of caring people.
Wonderful story, well told with a happy outcome to a challenging situation. I wish you the best in your move to a new part of the country. I hope it will be a very positive new universe for you to get acclimated to, and a place of discovery and dream come true adventures.

Relocating is a stressful, anxiety provoking experience. When my late husband and I moved from L A. to St Joseph, MO with our not quite 2 year old in 1988, the only thing we had to turn around and go back for was our son's 'Bear', which somehow he managed to literally lift the banquet cushion at a diner table at a little place in Kansas where we stopped for lunch, and hide it under there, leaving it behind. We got about 60 miles down the road to discover it gone. He told us he left it at the diner. We turned around and went back for 'Bear'. To this day I do not know how he managed to lift that cushion to hide 'Bear' without either my husband or I noticing it. The diner staff were astonished, too, when 'Bear' was discovered in his hiding place.
Safe travels!
