AESC has informed the state of South Carolina and our local partners that due to policy and market uncertainty, we are pausing construction at our South Carolina facility at this time, spokesman Brad Grantham said in a statement. We anticipate being able to resume construction once circumstances stabilize.
The Japanese-headquartered firm already has invested more than $1 billion into the Florence facility, Grantham said.
He said the company fully intends to meet our commitments to invest $1.6 billion and create 1,600 jobs in the coming years, but did not indicate what the new timeline might be. The company declined to provide further comment.
Gov. Henry McMaster, while speaking to reporters, pointed to uncertainty in Washington, D.C., as a reason.

At what point do red-state governors start to criticize the BBB and tariffs?

(58,482 posts)Thats Republican uncertainty, if you please, brought on by Republican chaos caused by Republican incompetence. What they ARE good at, is propaganda (they DO love their Fox Noise and their phony piety), and voter suppression. There is a reason they want total control over what our children learn in school through what our young adults learn in college. An indoctrinated person makes a control freaks job much easier.
But all that only works if they are pushing a unified message. If they cant keep that intact, then there is a struggle over who controls the propaganda, and if there is that, the control weakens. The last thing a Republican governor wants to do is tell his state that a local economic disaster was caused by Republican incompetence in Washington. It gets the locals to wondering if its contagious.

(26,023 posts)At the SC Democratic Convention last weekend (I was a delegate), the mere mention of the names of Graham or Mace brought much hilarity to the meeting hall. Tim Walz capitalized on the effect.
And as for our GOP Gubernator, Henry McMaster was a KA at the University of South Carolina. KA .. Kappa Alpha .. Knights of Alcohol (or Nights of Alcohol) .. Old South .. blackface .. Dixie .. "The South shall rise again," etc., etc., ad nauseum. And I speak on fairly good authority about the subject because my brother-in-law was a fraternity brother of our governor, and I've heard the KA bullshit for over a half century now.
