Governor Newsom today: "The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles--not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don't give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully."
With the willing and gleeful help of the corporate media, this administration will turn any hint of violence into a full on campaign against "lawless Democrats and immigrants". Fair? ABSOLUTELY NOT. But they are itching for this fight.
I hope community leaders and immigration advocates in LA work with the protestors to encourage peaceful protest ONLY.

(15,363 posts)but I don't see CA National Guardspeople firing on civilians . ever, even if they are federalized. These are people from the community. They might know some of the protestors, or be a little sympathetic.

(20,836 posts)I don't think that necessarily indicates anything one way or another about their desire to open fire on civilians.
I would hope that there wouldn't be many CA National Guardsmen who are eager to take part in the next Kent State massacre. Unless people really have forgotten about how awful that was, in which case, God help us all.

(11,151 posts)Trump has been itching to do something to California. Good to see Newsom speaking out and not staying silent.

(4 posts)I am monitoring Los Angeles media and KTLA reports that there has already been violence on the streets of Paramount and Compton. This is all Cheeto Mussolini needs to order martial law. The goal here, IMHO, is to cancel next years elections and consolidate dictatorial power to himself. Heck. I wouldnt be surprised if he abolishes Congress and the Courts too.

(22,364 posts)More details please. The LAPD released a report yesterday calling the protests "peaceful."

(10,477 posts)Plus the coming bond sales. Any internal violence will knock the economy off its pins. The GOP owns all the branches and the economy. An economic downturn will be fatal for the party in power. Americans may not care about their history and their democracy but they do very very much care about their money.

(13,312 posts)although this power has never been used in this way before, it is pretty clearly spelled out: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State", where 'State' is referring to a US State.
The framers of the Constitution had incredible foresight in predicting a time when a Federal government might infringe on the rights of the citizens of a State, as was debated in the Federalist Paper No 46:

(7,887 posts)Not sure why Newsom believes citizens should passively allow themselves to just get run over (literally), or gassed, or shot with non-lethal rounds (that can kill people) without provoking a reaction.
There were maybe 100 protesters in Paramount from every video I saw and none of them started the violence.
Reacted to ICE/DHS violence? Yup. Started shit? Nope.

(22,364 posts)but I heard a reporter say that the area (Paramount) of LA with the protests yesterday is eighty percent Hispanic. That would not surprise me at all. Hispanics are the majority or on the verge of the majority in many places in CA. So in a way, it should surprise no one that this is where the protests are.
IronLionZion
(49,067 posts)they wanted to do this in California because it's a blue state with a Dem governor eyeing the presidency.
GOP used the George Floyd protests against Tim Walz in last year's campaign. They want to promote a story of violence raging out of control across areas that elected Democrats.
stillcool
(33,965 posts)that's the problem with protests born out of instantaneous rage. The way the gestapo/police handle it only enrages the crowd more, making it more volatile. They pick up whatever they can and toss it. There is no talk of calming down. All rage.

(4,747 posts)I also think that's all the excuse they'll need, regardless of the peaceful agenda of their opposition. Simply wearing a mask, carrying a badge, and strapped up with heavy firepower is more an axcuse than they'll ever need.
