Southern Baptists target porn, sports betting, same-sex marriage and 'willful childlessness'Southern Baptists meeting this week in Dallas will be asked to approve resolutions calling for a legal ban on pornography and a reversal of the U.S. Supreme Court's approval of same-sex marriage.
The proposed resolutions call for laws on gender, marriage and family based on what they say is the biblically stated order of divine creation. They also call for legislators to curtail sports betting and to support policies that promote childbearing.
The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, is also expected to debate controversies within its own house during its annual meeting Tuesday and Wednesday such as a proposed ban on churches with women pastors. There are also calls to defund the organizations public policy arm, whose anti-abortion stance hasnt extended to supporting criminal charges for women having abortions.
In a denomination where support for President Donald Trump is strong, there is little on the advance agenda referencing specific actions by Trump since taking office in January in areas such as tariffs, immigration or the pending budget bill containing cuts in taxes, food aid and Medicaid.

I'm someone who quit their wacky idolatry after my teen years. After finally reading all the way through the bible I decided the christianity of the bible bangers ignored Jesus's central teachings. They made a big deal about the inerrant word of Saul of Tarsis. SBC was always more like the Pharisees and Sadducees than any twelve.
My certainty draws on my multiple SBC bible camps where I saw summer sinning sold to teens like an open secret.
Something about strict rules and secrecy always draws the pervs.

(46,655 posts)So any married couple or long term couple would need to provide proof of medical reasons why they were not able to have children?
What about single men and women? Does the transgression of willful childlessness outrank the transgression of sex outside of marriage? Will they need to provide affidavits explaining why they did not get married in the ideal window of childbearing years?
What an invasive crock.

But this one gets me... willful childlessness! WILLFUL childlessness. As though a woman isn't worth anything if she doesn't produce a baby for the state. And, actually, that's the way they think and are passing laws for right now. Unwanted babies and babies with no family emotionally supporting them (because they're spending all their time working to make enough to buy food, formula, etc) are destined to become either sociopathic or dead at some age before adulthood. But never mind what science has taught us over these last 60 or so years. trump knows all... but all you have to do is look at his kids to see he never gave a crap about "raising" them or giving them unconditional love. What a freaking hypocrite!

(2,021 posts)My grandfather was a Baptist and he served as mayor of Lebanon Missouri three times.
I met him once when I was around 11 or 12. It was, at best, a very awkward meeting.
Once Id shaken his hand I was told by my mother that they needed to talk privately. He lived in a crappy little house with his third wife with a propane tank in the side yard. It was probably considered a nice place in 1966. His wife tried talking to me and tried to figure out some way of entertaining me but we both quickly found that we had nothing to say to one another.
So I watched my mother and my grandfather talk. I have no idea what she said or he said but it involved a lot of very tense body language and some finger waving in his face until she stormed off and said to me, come on were going home. We were living in Springfield Missouri at the timewhile my father was in Vietnam so it wasnt a particularly long drive.
My grandmother was his first wife and he had abandoned her and four children in the depths of the great depression. The two youngest he foosted off on his mother who apparently was a very harsh woman and treated the children like they were slave labor.
I dont know if my mother was sexually abused or not but whatever happened in Lebanon in the one year that she lived with her grandmother (my great grandmother) scarred her for the rest of her life. My grandmother (her mother) was able to get a job as a city clerk in Springfileld, Mo and was able to reclaim her two youngest (my mother and Uncle
John) after what was apparently a year of sheer hell. My mother was 5 in that year and her brother 2.
It would be impossible to exaggerate her hatred of Baptists. And she taught that to me. It was a casual hatred for me for a long time until I started in on my first degree at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield Missouri (*Now Missouri state). Then I got to be around a whole bunch of Baptists. Then I learned to fully and completely hate them.
The southern Baptist have one of the most twisted belief systems of any of the major denominations thats style themselves as Christian in the United States. The reason they exist is because of unending racism, overt misogyny, an early form of Christian dominionism. These are the people that are against dancing and pretty much are against any sort of fun. They are the largest protestant mainline church in the US and they are shrinking. I believe they will continue to shrink. But not quickly enough and they still have way too much power..
Whatever policy documents they produce during this meeting will surely be complete abominations and have no resemblance to anything Christ-like.
Ill leave you with one of my fathers favorite jokes:
Why dont southern Baptist fuck standing up?
Because somebody might think theyre dancing.

(7,917 posts)Why aren't they standing up for those people who are being hurt by the callous, willfully cruel policies and actions of the Trump administration?
We are about to lose our Constitutional Democratic Republic. Maybe that's a bit more important than some guy watching porn on the internet, or women pastors, or two people of the same sex who love each other getting married.
Do you actually think God cares about any of that?
We're to learn the lessons of love. Stop thinking in terms of negatives, and think in terms of being kind, loving, generous, forgiving...all the things Jesus taught us to be.
A friend of my daughter is married, and he and his partner have adopted two children. From what she tells me, they're wonderful, loving parents.
That's the key word here, Love.
That's what God cares about. We're here to learn the lessons of love.
Much of what we think of as sin, isn't.
But, the act of engendering fear in other people for living outside the social boundaries set by religion, and then judging, condemning and punishing them for it is truly a sin.
Lovelessness is the sin.

As a result, daddy was completely averse to religion as was my mother (for a different reason).
So I was never baptized. I did have one friend in Jr. High who came for a sleepover and was horrified to hear I wasn't baptized. She offered to do it for me over the bathroom sink, but I declined since I was afraid my mother would walk in and catch me mid-baptized.
My husband was a Congregationlist, now converted to Judaism. His daughter is a rabbi.
