Speaker Johnson: Newsom should be 'tarred and feathered

House Speaker Mike Johnson would not weigh in on whether California Gov. Gavin Newsom should be arrested -- a suggestion made by President Donald Trump -- but said the governor should be "tarred and feathered."

"Look, that's not my lane. I'm not going to give you legal analysis on whether Gavin Newsom should be arrested, but he ought to be tarred and feathered. I’ll say that," Johnson said Tuesday at the weekly GOP news conference. "He's standing in the way of the administration and the carrying out of federal law, right? He is applauding the bad guys and standing in the way of the good guys."

(snip)

"President Trump has put his hand on the table and said, 'Not on my watch,' and we applaud that, so we’re standing with him," he said.

Newsom clapped back on social media, writing, "Good to know we’re skipping the arrest and going straight for the 1700’s style forms of punishment. A fitting threat given the @GOP want to bring our country back to the 18th Century."

64. Tarring and feathering historically was not just a humiliation.
Tue Jun 10, 2025, 02:40 PM
Tuesday

It was a slow form of execution done with boiling tar usually causing slow painful death due to burns and then toxicity and infection. Tar is a form of crude oil not easily removed from skin so it literally partially cooked a person. It would be like falling into a natural boiling tar pit.

Even without the boiling, contact with crude oil or petroleum products in most forms is incredibly poisonous and toxins absorb quickly through the skin. The people who assisted in the Exxon Valdez oil spill were tracked over the years and many of them died early due to health complications - all who assisted in 1989 were dead by 2010.

There was also a case of a man in the Ukraine who willingly jumped into a reservoir of motor oil for a prank video and completely submerged. When he gets out his companions are trying to clean it off with a pressure washer and he's complaining he can't breathe and can't see and is burning. Followups are sketchy, but it's reported he died within 48 hours.

So I am sure our odious Speaker believes he's joking metaphorically, but the amount of apathy for the well-being of any perceived enemy is toxic and unconscionable - and for a person claiming to be as religious as he is, wishing specific harm on someone is complete blasphemy. Saying something like that out loud might give someone who is equally as ignorant the idea to actually try it. Politicians publicly wishing harm on individuals "should be tarred and feathered" is stochastic terrorism because it is de-facto permission at a high level for someone to actually carry it out.

The initial order was for boiling tar, but that was during the Crusades. Tarring and feathering in the US sense was about humiliation not killing.

https://allthingsliberty.com/2013/12/5-myths-tarring-feathering/

The notion that hot tar caused severe, sometimes fatal burns is based on the assumption that “tar” meant the asphalt we use on roads, which is typically stored in liquid state at about 300°F (150°C). But in the eighteenth century “tar” meant pine tar, used for several purposes in building and maintaining ships. As any baseball fan knows, pine tar doesn’t have to be very hot to be sticky. Shipyards did warm that tar to make it flow more easily, but pine tar starts to melt at about 140°F (60°C). That’s well above the ideal for bathwater, but far from the temperature of hot asphalt.

Plus the governor is not applauding the bad guys (Cops) and standing in the way of the good guys (peaceful protesters).

Johnson is egging on MAGA to do harm to California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Violent MAGAs, who are full of hate (see Jan. 6, where the not peaceful MAGA would have torn apart any law maker they could find. MAGA beat cops with sticks. Hand to hand combat.) Johnson is inciting domestic terrorists.

Present day I see:

Peaceful protesters getting beaten, flashed banged, reporters getting shot with rubber bullets, intentionally. etc. etc.

Good guys vs bad guys. The GOP speaker/holy roller does not know the difference.
