In the past year, Yosemites famed granite monolith El Capitan has become a popular backdrop for political protests. In June 2024, climbers hung a Stop the Genocide banner criticizing Israelis attacks on Gaza. In February during the parks famous firefall, an upside-down American flag was displayed in opposition to staffing cuts at the National Park Service. Last month, a transgender pride flag went up after the Donald Trump administration began erasing mention of trans communities from government websites.
Now, park officials are trying to put a stop to the politicizing of El Cap and the rest of the parks wilderness. In the annual Superintendents Compendium, a document outlining new rules and policies, acting Superintendent Raymond McPadden explicitly forbade anyone from hanging large banners, flags or signs on the parks natural or cultural features.
This restriction is necessary to preserve the values of wilderness character in accordance with the Wilderness Act, provide for an unimpaired visitor experience, protect natural and cultural resources in designated Wilderness and Potential Wilderness Addition portions of the park, McPadden wrote in the document, which is dated May 20. This restriction is also necessary to maintain public safety, as it prohibits draping items that could endanger and interfere with permitted or allowable unpermitted climbing activity.

(13,867 posts)1. kind of in favor of this ...
don't clutter up (litter up) my escape to the outdoors - with your personal little memes or brilliant slogans.
( even if it might be one that I agree with ... still doesn't belong here. )
And, for context - I also don't want to see you erecting crucifix and/or nativity scenes out here on public lands. Nor political adds for you local assemblyman. No matter how 'inspired' you are in the cause. Regardless of how desperately important you, or your agenda, are - you do not speak for everyone. (and definitely not me. at least not out here. )

(36,651 posts)2. LOL, try and stop them.
You'll have to scale El Capitan to do it.

that they project a 2,000-foot image of his face onto El Capitan.
