Son lives on Capitol Hill. He is flying out of Dulles International late Friday night for Paris.
DC just sent blast email announcing area-wide road closures starting Thursday night to accommodate parade preparations.
For example -- the pics of the tanks coming in on rail cars? Now all those tanks must be offloaded from rail cars, then loaded onto tank transporters -- big trucks with lowboy trailers to haul the tanks to staging area. The tank transporters cannot turn on a dime so they need major road access. Then there's the issue of getting 6,000 troops formed up, parade, then return to staging area and go back home.
Son now is leaving home early Friday morning, Uber to Dulles for $75, then sit at Dulles for 14-16 hours waiting for his flight.
Son also said lots of DC businesses are concerned about the Proud Boys and other thugs showing up, so, many local restaurants, etc., are closing. Clearly the Proud Boys and other Jan 6ers are coming to DC to infiltrate any peaceful demonstrations.

(2,475 posts)Is for everyone to be no shows , don't give them any excuse to cause problems. If only trumpers show up and there is damage or riots it is all on them.

(2,732 posts)Son has two friends who are Capitol Police officers -- these are the heroes who saved the Capitol on Jan 6 and who got the shit beat out of them by the J6ers.
Son has been talking with them - - - they know the Proud Boys and other J6ers are on the way, they are identifying them- and let's say the Capitol Police and DC Police will not be kind to them.

(18,542 posts)This parade is so embarrassing, and you are pointing out that it's not only embarrassing, it is temporarily ruining the economy of the entire area during prime summertime travel. I had thought the parade was going to coincide with the 4th of July, so at least there was a little fig leaf of face-saving, but now I realize it is all about Trump. It's excruciating to have a president this self-obsessed and oblivious to how others perceive him. He's the closest thing the United States has ever had to a Kim Jong-Un.
I hope the parade ratings are even lower than CNN's.

(34,810 posts)it just hit me why this feels so awkward. Of course the entire thing he is doing is absurd and self loving etc. etc. and we hate it while he seems to love it. How come he does not realize he is MAKING us watch or hear about etc. A large percentage, I would guess, do not give a crap about his birthday.
HE is doing this for himself. How does that make anyone feel good? My gift for my birthday was to give myself a parade and I made other people watch it so they know that it is my birthday.
That is really very very sad and sick as hell. My god what are we going to do now that he has more people supporting his nonsense?
