Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumsso the AI gang at google have hijacked my android phone and disabled the on/off button on the side.
google AI, something for which I have absolute no use. there will be a special place in hell for these losers who are
shoving this garbage down out throats. or a camp in a swamp would do IMO. let those who want it love it and leave everyone else alone.

(37,283 posts)Go to the settings - I think it is hidden in the accessibility settings.
Drove me nuts - her phone is the same kind I have, but two years younger. I tried to shut it down and instead of popping up the three shut down options, it wanted me to talk to it. So I started an immediate search to figure out how to turn it off.
ETA: It was the gestures button.
Here's a youtube for the phone she has:

(839 posts)I had already done this on my Samsung A36.
1) Settings
2) Advanced Features
3) Side Button
4) Long Press
Under Long Press, you can have your side button call up a Digital Assistant (select under settings gear icon), Bixby, or Power Off Menu. I had already removed Gemini as a choice.
I chose Power Off Menu. When I long press the power button, I get: Power Off, Restart, Emergency Call, and Medical Info.
The process may be different for different phones. This was Android 15. On an older Android phone (Android 11) I can go to ...
1) Settings
2) Buttons and Gestures
3) Power Key
4) Power Key Menu
5) Device Controls
Make sure Show Device Controls is toggled to 'On'.

If you don't have the option to uninstall it, disable it instead.

(71,790 posts)so I tried to reprogram the side button but when I go to settings - side button and click side button it kicks me back to the settings menu and does not let me program the button. looks like a lost cause

(298 posts)What kind of android do you have? Mine is a Samsung and this is what worked for me
Open Settings: Navigate to your phone's settings.
Advanced Features: Find and tap on "Advanced features".
Side Key: Select "Side key" (or "Bixby key" on some Samsung devices).
Double press: Choose what happens when you double-press the side button (e.g., launch the camera, open an app).
Press and hold: Select what happens when you press and hold the side button (e.g., power off menu, launch Bixby).
If all that fails, you can download third-party apps like Button Mapper from the Playstore.
This video shows what worked for me (images varied a little). I think this is what you already did, but just in case
Goof luck! I HAD to get that off my phone too, so I feel for you.

(5,296 posts)As noted above, all the changes from the update can be customized to how you want it. It's not an Apple where you are locked to what they want. If you don't want to go to the links above, a simple Google search will tell you how to make the changes you want. OR, you could ask the AI on your phone how to do it and it will also tell you.
