General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSeen making the rounds on Socials, Migrants in CA are preparing to strike, our FOOD chain is gonna get squirrely...
First, I wanted to share this 10 min video from an activist who outlines the specifics of how the migrant farm workers are preparing to abandon the fields, and what that will do to our already limping economy and supply chains. Also, she gives some good advice on praparing for a General Strike with suggestions for links.
Whether you agree with it or not, it might be a good idea to prepare ... start filling your pantry if possible...
Also, here's the thread on Redditt about the Migrants in CA organizing a full on strike during our current harvet season. Food will be out there rotting... wonder how this will also affect meat and dairy...?
https://www.reddit.com/r/union/comments/1lsthcc/farm_workers_strike_is_coming/
There's several threads on this on Redditt, and I picked the one with more comments for your reading pleasure...
Anyway, this is a big deal, and won't be getting any play by the MSM until it's happening, or maybe not at all, considering they will keep the narrative of "Everything's FINE"

Stupidity isn't enough of an excuse, gop has to intentionally be doing these things to cause harm.

(20,090 posts)First and foremost, I have not seen any statements from the UFW, the union that represents many farm workers, about a strike.
Second, a large number of workers are already staying away from the fields, as high as 70-80% for some farms.

(15,512 posts)I've seen other post on socials as well, and it looks like the union is behind it...
And even with 70% of farm workers not picking, we're looking at a LOT of food going to waste.

(20,090 posts)If this was an unauthorized wildcat strike by union workers, the employer could bring in scabs at lower wages.
If its a wildcat strike by non-unionized workers, well, isnt that what is already happening in many places?
See what I mean about the reliability of information sources?

(15,512 posts)California Farm workers are organizing this, and using a petition online to also gain traction, here's the Instagram post copied:
LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) is not organizing the strike
But activists behind the movement are linking to LULACs petition because it asks for the same demands the strike is pushing for like protections for undocumented essential workers and immediate pathways to citizenship
So what IS the petition?
Its called Protect Essential Workers and its on LULACs official site
When you sign it, your info gets sent to Congress asking them to legalize essential workers including farmworkers whove held this country up through pandemics, fires, heat waves, and more. Theyve earned their dignity, protection, and peace of mind
This is a strategic move. Activists are using a credible petition from an established org to give people a real action step. Doesnt mean LULAC is behind the strike. But it does mean this movement is smart, organized, and pushing the right buttons
But heres the question a lot of people are too nervous to ask out loud
Is it actually real if theres no date and its all TBD?
And heres a fact that doesnt get shared enough
🔹 About 73 percent of farmworkers in the U.S. are immigrants
🔹 Roughly half are undocumented
🔹 These are the people planting, picking, packing, and processing the food you eat
🔹 They do backbreaking work in extreme heat for poverty wages
🔹 And during COVID, they were called essential while being denied basic protections
(Source: USDA Economic Research Service, National Agricultural Workers Survey)
So yes, this is real
And long overdue
But heres why some people are unsure
Theres no set strike date. Just within 48 hours notice
No confirmed union support like UFW or CIW yet
No official press releases, websites, or public safety plans
Nothing in the news cycle from major outlets
So heres the truth
Its real in the way a storm on the horizon is real
The clouds are forming. The pressure is building. People are watching
Its not fake
But its not fully formed
Its a movement in motion
And sometimes thats the most powerful place to be
If enough people take it seriously, it becomes real

Will share more about strike when more info. Stay tuned.
A national farmworker strike is coming.
Its called Huelga Para La Dignidadand its not just about labor. Its about survival.
Farmworkers are demanding immediate citizenship, an end to raids and deportations, and protections for all undocumented essential workers.
California produces most of the nations fruit, vegetables, nuts, and wine.
Without labor, there is no harvest. Without justice, there will be no silence.
📢 Dont wait until its too late.
🍎 Dont buy produce during the strike.

(26,042 posts)I'm running out of room to store the extra supplies I've been getting since trump was installed. We put in a large garden this year, and I've been canning the produce as fast as I can. (anyone need pickles?) I'm thinking of buying a bunch of produce raised by local farmers, that we aren't growing, and canning that too.
This video made me think of something else--is the big herding up of migrants a prelude to using them as slave labor when the un-imprisoned migrants leave? Is that the reason for the big push for numbers, and why he's starting to grab naturalized citizens? It would take awhile to gather up enough to replace the ones leaving, but I could see him also squashing any strike from migrant workers. He probably dreams of seeing his political enemies laboring in the fields.
Once again, if you're not paranoid, you're not paying attention.

A couple years ago, there was a PBS short on Worker's Comp that covered Prison Labor and their lack of Workers Comp affecting parolees and people who got released, but are now unable to work due to factory and other work accidents sustained during their incarceration.
