White House border czar Tom Homan visited Portland, Seattle

The Trump administration has threatened sanctuary jurisdictions with a loss of federal funding and even criminal penalties.

Homan visited the ICE processing center in Portland on Wednesday morning where he met with ICE officers before departing the city, said Cody Bowman, a press officer for Portland Mayor Keith Wilson.

“The City of Portland and Portland Police Bureau did not have a role in coordinating the visit,” Bowman said in a statement. “As a reminder to our community, the Portland Police Bureau does not enforce federal immigration law.”

In response to Homan’s visit, Mayor Wilson reaffirmed the city’s sanctuary status, while acknowledging ICE officers are legally allowed to operate in the city. But Wilson said residents should not confuse legality and morality.

“Our city is horrified and disturbed by images of masked men pulling our community members off the streets and out of their cars and homes at gunpoint. We are disgusted by the callous inhumanity and rhetoric displayed by ICE leadership,” Wilson said in a statement. “The masked and armed federal officers roaming the streets in unmarked vans touted by ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan are chilling symbols of fear and oppression, not the freedom, liberty, or opportunity we cherish.”
