So I have, for almost 25 years now, limited my meat intake and completely cut beef from my diet.
I have not so much had a bite of steak in at least 22 years. It is mainly for health issues (high cholesterol and weight).
Given the situation we all find ourselves in and genuinely not knowing what the future holds, I decided to give it a try again. For a brunch this morning with just my spouse and I.
Unfortunately we did little planning or prep ahead of time and we fussed at each a little trying to read on the Internet how best to prep and grill it, what is the ideal temperature that won't also turn us off to it if it's too rare, it was also late morning and neither of us had eaten anything yet so our patience was wearing a little thin. It was very minor and funny to be honest because we never fuss at each about anything 🤣
So the funniest thing to me was in the cooking. We did a good job but I kind of laughed because when you are cooking any other meat it gives a very specific safe food temperature it needs to have, like 165⁰F for chicken or 160⁰F for pork or whatever. With steak, it all depends. 120⁰F? Sure, that's ok🤣. 155⁰F? Sure, that's ok too🤣. I saw temperature ranges as low as 110 to as high as 165, depending on how "done" you want it but it just made me laugh that while everything else is "this temperature or you die from food poisoning" steak's safe temperature is like "whatever you want is fine"🤣.
We cooked some hash browns, the steak, eggs and cucumber and tomato salad. It was all good and we did a surprisingly good job on something we haven't cooked in over 25 years.
Would I eat steak again? Probably not. It was just something different and since I didn't want to wait too long if things go sideways to try it again.
I just thought I'd share. It was kind of funny and interesting experience. We did good. Love on your family and friends and spend time with those you care about because, at the end of the day, that is what matters
