the shooter apparently blocked the doors so no one could get out. And then decided to turn the gun on themself.
Good grief, what did those little children ever do to the shooter.
The shooter knew it was a morning mass during the school year.. Apparently the mother of the shooter retired from working at that church and school.
When will this end? When can little kids go to school and services without worrying about being killed?
I am just sick at heart.

(2,860 posts)Nothing.
But there is a certain type of person who goes around spreading hatred toward Christians. It's even all over this site, daily. It never stops, and it's allowed to stand unchallenged. That is how predominant this garbage is.
As the years pass, the hostility toward Christians only increases. So shouldn't we ask ourselves what role that may have played in the final outcome here?
And this isn't just about Christian-bashing, even though that is a particularly personal one to me. This is about ALL hatred that is spread like a noxious and cancerous disease in todays online and media ecosystems. This shooter could have just as easily been a MAGA person who has been taught that all Democrats are the cause of his perceived injustices.
The point is that all hate is equally childish, and in many cases, downright evil. And maybe we should all be looking inward and addressing our own role in modern societies state of decline. I'm guilty of it myself sometimes and that fact isn't lost on me, but I do try my best to not contribute to hatred.

(2,860 posts)is mentally ill, there are no affiliation boundaries.
In my opinion, these people choose children as targets for the sole purpose of leveraging maximum outrage. Their goals appear to generally be self-serving and a way to get attention. and it works every damned time.
Standing back and looking in, I saw a mentally ill person act on the hatred that he was acclimated to, and in the wake of such evil, the rest of society rose up and reached for the throat of their neighbor in an attempt to extract vengeance. I may be an emotional human like everyone else, but I try to not allow those emotions to steer my actions. So when I see this movie playing out, it almost makes my head "blue-screen". The reaction of most people is to verbally attack other uninvolved people who have ideological differences.
It's like a swirling mass of never-ending and pointless hatred, and it appears to me that people enjoy it. It makes my stomach churn.

Per NewsweeK; court records reviewed by Newsweek show Westman was granted a name change from Robert to Robin in 2020. A judge approved the petition signed by Westman's mother that said the "minor child identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that.
I see a lot of people referring to the shooter as "he".
Just asking a question.

(2,860 posts)is necessary, a prime example is all right here in your own reply.
Who would have thought that me begging others to stop hating each other would get me attacked.
Well actually I knew it would happen, its actually quite predictable. Certain types feed on it.
My church helped to relocated 17 refugee families so far in 3 years, and funded their moves. What did yours do?
I ran errands for 2 blind people already this week and shuttled one to a medical appointment,. What did you do?
Maybe I should just stop doing all of this because it's all just a big flying spaghetti monster lie, right? Of course I won't. I live by my faith, not the angry spittle tossed in my direction.
I do this work in the name of God.
Others can hate me all they want; The Bible predicts this and warns us about it. The world is full of hateful and lost people. All I can do is pray for them. You will be no exception.

Cirsium
(2,838 posts)This is absolutely ridiculous. No one here would criticize you for running errands for 2 blind people, relocating 17 refugee families. No one "hates" you.

(2,860 posts)the premise of my posts on this subject. I really don't care what you or anyone else thinks of me personally. It's about people who preach and spread hatred towards others. In this case, it was Christians again, and now kids are dead because of it. Some can't help but to turn it into spreading bile about Christianity. See the headlines for an example. You left out all of the context in order execute you attempt at shaming me. It's ok, I've learned to expect it from certain types. We have all been warned about those kind of people in this world.
Leaked photos show a mentally ill shooter wrote "Where is your God now" on the hardware. That's basically the same thing that the Mayor said yesterday, and then most of the social media world. Where do you suppose the shooter got such thoughts and learned that? I suppose you can just stay in denial, blame people like me and the guns, then when nothing changes you can scream even louder and mock me further as if I'm trying to be a victim. See, no one shot at me or my kids. I actually care about results, less violence, and less hate. I offer something that we can all do, right now without any money or legislative involvement. But that is rejected because it would be too hard for too many to stop spreading and feeding on hate.
So do carry on.
Cirsium
(2,838 posts)You are blaming those who disagree with you about religion for this tragedy. That is unconscionable. Would you really have us believe that the gun violence in the US is caused by anti-Christian bigotry?
Christians are not a persecuted or oppressed group in the US. It is quite the opposite. People are free to criticize what you say and do, but you can't handle that apparently.
You say that you really don't care what I or anyone else thinks of you personally. You claim the high moral ground of defending all Christians from some sort of persecution and hatred. Yet you complain that you are being mocked and shamed. To the extent that you are being mocked and shamed - certainly not my intention and I deny that I am doing that - you might be mocked and shamed for what you are saying, not because you are a self-proclaimed Christian.
You have learned to expect it from certain types? "Certain types?" We have all been warned about those kind of people in this world? "Those kind people?" What sort of Christianity is this?
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
Matthew 7:3-5

(2,860 posts)words in my mouth. It's intellectually dishonest and certainly not part of a winning strategy for debate.
Try paying attention to the actual words I say rather than your interpretation of them. I choose my words appropriately and expect English speakers to take them as they are. when I say I like the letter "X", that does not mean I hate all the other letters, so trying to make these connections is just silly. Try operating in good faith for a moment, or would it kill you to admit there is merit on my opinion? Maybe you just despise Christians SO much that you think they are too dumb to have a valid position on any subject? See how erroneous interpretation can lead us down the wrong roads?
Again, read my prior comments on the subject matter. Hate is the foundation for many of the societal issues right now, and it most certainly played a role in what drove this deranged shooter. You can deny it til the cows come home for all I care, but that won't change what is reflected in the real world.
Cirsium
(2,838 posts)I didn't mischaracterize what you said. I don't "despise Christians." Nothing I said would suggest that. I don't think Christians are "too dumb to have a valid position on any subject" and nothing I said would suggest that either.

(2,860 posts)if you stand back and read wha tI said and then your reply to it, maybe you might understand what my actual point was, and that is making asinine assumptions about others isn't productive at all. It's just a method of denigration.
But it appears you may have still missed the point of referenced snark entirely. Shocker.

(60,512 posts)to hate towards Christians here. Now you are shocked that someone responded less than favorably.
I get that you were trying to make the point that both sides have a problem with ideologically based hate of others, followed by being against it. This is a prime example of both siderism that is actually not true.
True, you can find posts criticizing religious leaders, but look at the criticism it is almost always for a specific thing they just did or said. In addition, I have never seen anything that attacks all people of a given faith.
The fact is that there is likely a majority or at least a plurality of people here identifying as Christian, including all denominations.
Crunchy Frog
(27,788 posts)in our society overall, there is far more hatred directed by people calling themselves Christians towards non-Christians and non religious people overall.
I'm only just catching up on the news since I've been busy with other things today, but if this guy was outspokenly anti-Christian, in our current political environment, I expect this event will be used as a cudgel against the non-religious and against "liberals" who get accused by the religious right of all being atheist. I expect this will be exploited politically in some really ugly ways.

(4,551 posts)It's like saying all Americans are like Trump. Not all non Christians hate Christians. Not all Christians hate non Christians. Yes there are people using "Christianity" as an excuse for their bad behavior, but it's not all Christians. Yes there are probably non-Christians who do bad things too, but not all.
The only people I personally have issues with are the ones who knowingly and deliberately harm others through cruelty and violence.
Yes I will be honest I do hate those mean people, but I don't ever plan on acting on that hatred. The only exceptions for harming someone else is self defense or saving another from death, but only if you or someone else are in imminent mortal danger.

(331 posts)no one and nowhere is safe from these horrible guns, so it is so frightening to send her off to school. One of my grandsons lives with us. He is starting his junior year next week. I just dropped him off at school a little bit ago to practice soccer. Last year his high school had so many lockdowns, I lost track. Last spring some of the soccer players received threats via Instagram or some social network. My grandson showed us the comments, and we contacted the police. He forwarded on the threat to the policeman. They worked on it through the night along with the FBI, and the student was arrested the next day. I am thankful that my grandson feels that it is okay to tell an adult about these threats and not assume that it is just a hoax. I know that his high school is doing all they can to keep the students safe, but it will never be safe with all those weapons out there.

(8,205 posts)Almost 8 and almost 10. They go to a church-run school (though not Catholic). The youngest girl started kindergarten there two days ago. When I heard about the shootings yesterday I thought of them and hoped their school would be a safe place for them.

(126,924 posts)If he'd never been arrested, and if he'd never been treated for mental illness (though he doesn't sound very sane), he wouldn't have been flagged on a background check. There is also a "red flag" law that allows family members or law enforcement to petition a court to take firearms from someone who poses a significant danger to themselves or others. Maybe nothing like that ever happened either.
