After returning home from the war, it wasn’t until he landed a decent paying union job that Dad was able to begin to work our family out of poverty to lower middle class. And then, after a life-threatening industrial accident and costly hospital stay, that job’s health care benefits likely saved the family from being bankrupted right back into poverty again. Years later, the added income from Mom’s own union job meant I got the opportunity to be the first in the family to go to college.

Norma Rae: I want this church for a union meetin' next Saturday. Blacks and whites sittin' together.
Reverend Hubbard: This is a house of God.
Norma Rae: I'm waitin' to see whether it is or it isn't.

Reverend Hubbard: We're gonna miss your voice in the choir, Norma.
Norma Rae: You're gonna hear it raised up someplace else.
