Nan Palmero was at a rehearsal dinner in Mexico City's trendy Roma Norte neighborhood, ahead of a wedding of two American friends, when he heard a "rumbling" outside.
From the restaurant's second story, Palmero described seeing a large group of people moving through the streets, some holding placards, shouting "Gringos leave."
He later learned that demonstrators smashed restaurant windows and damaged vehicles, including the new car of his friends' wedding planner a local resident he said.
"They wrecked her car, they smashed a window, they ripped off a mirror, they spray-painted the side of it. It was really pretty nasty," he said.

(68,102 posts)... I especially enjoy it when I hear, "I'm an American, I KNOW my rights!! Where's the US Embassy, I want to file a protest!!"

(68,102 posts)... when I travel abroad, I wear slacks and shoes, button shirts or polos, no fanny packs, no water bottles, no selfie stick, no doom scrolling a smart phone anywhere, and I do have a nice sized maple leaf patch on my backpack and I'd never, ever have anything political on my cap.
A little consideration goes a long way, something that shamefully, Americans are not known for abroad.
I move away from the drunk, loud and obnoxious of all nationalities.

(1,282 posts)Mexico generally is not a place that can well-afford to scare away tourists, but I'd not be shocked if
some there may be making an exception in the case of visitors from the US?

(6,118 posts)Protests against US property purchase and tourism there have been going on for several years. It's actual local anger at the effects of US expats and tourism on culture in Mexico City. We're not talking about Cancun or some dusty cathedral town in Michoacan.

(12,676 posts)On the show that helps people buy houses. House Hunters International. Last time I watched that area they talked about how pricey and favorite it is. I bet locals hate it that housing is insane there now.
Reminds me of when I moved to WA from CA got treated badly by some for that even though we came from a town in CA many years ago where prices were lower than WA place we moved to. So when I moved to OR said I was from WA since we lived there ten yrs.

(2,095 posts)Lots of cruise ships especially seem to be targeted as the symbol of overtourism. Some cities in Alaska tried to limit the number of ships and tourists that could visit during the season. Same in Europe.
So not just Mexico, but all over.

(11,223 posts)"To prevent cities that are "not made for living, but for tourism," destinations can reduce short-term rentals and impose significantly higher taxes on tourists, said Lionel Saul, visiting lecturer at EHL Hospitality Business School.
While academics are developing ideas for "regenerative travel" a form of tourism that helps locals, rather than hinders, them cities should include local communities in tourism development, he said."

(238 posts)I spent three months in Mexico City once. It is a vibrant, exciting city full of history, beautiful architecture, warm people, and amazing food. This was in the late 1990s though, before the Mango Mussolini was even in politics. Sucks that people like him are actively working to turn so many people against each other. I can't wait til this nightmare is over.

(33,586 posts)Don't have interest in places like Cancun or any beach or hot place! (Texas is already hot and I don't like sand and salt)
I would go for the culture, architecture, history and cool mountain air.
