AMA statement on Florida ending all vaccine mandates

“The American Medical Association strongly opposes Florida’s plan to end all vaccine mandates, including those required for school attendance. This unprecedented rollback would undermine decades of public health progress and place children and communities at increased risk for diseases such as measles, mumps, polio, and chickenpox resulting in serious illness, disability, and even death. While there is still time, we urge Florida to reconsider this change to help prevent a rise of infectious disease outbreaks that put health and lives at risk.”

1. Western states form vaccine alliance

The Democratic governors of California, Oregon and Washington said Wednesday they are forming an alliance to coordinate vaccine recommendations for their states.

Meanwhile, Florida announced plans to become the first state to phase out all vaccine mandates, including ending requirements that kids be vaccinated against dangerous diseases before enrolling in schools.

Public health experts have relied on vaccines, including school mandates, for decades to limit the spread of communicable diseases and keep kids and adults safe.

The contrasting moves come amid turmoil at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where several top leaders resigned last week to protest efforts by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, to dismiss CDC Director Susan Monarez for pushing back against Kennedy’s vaccine policies ...

2. Ending vaccine mandates is playing with fire

Analysis by

... Florida’s move means schoolchildren would no longer be required to get previously required vaccinations for measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), polio, tetanus, chickenpox and hepatitis B. (The Covid-19 vaccine is not mandated for schoolchildren by any state.)

While the decision is being billed as a win for freedom, the effectiveness of such vaccines relies upon widespread adoption in order to build herd immunity. We’ve already seen just this year how depressed MMR vaccination rates can lead to measles outbreaks, like the one in West Texas.

It remains to be seen how Florida’s move will affect its vaccination rates and whether it will lead to outbreaks. But polls suggest many Republicans especially would forgo vaccinations for their children if they could.

And that could mark a major shift in the health of Americans. Even as Republicans targeted Covid-19 mandates earlier this decade, they often cast their efforts as being limited to that vaccine. When they occasionally suggested reviewing mandates for other vaccines, they often backed off. Now those appear to be in jeopardy, too ...

3. State organizations react to Florida's decision
Wed Sep 3, 2025, 11:39 PM
Wednesday

... The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement on Wednesday saying every family should have access to immunizations to keep their community healthy.

“For many kids, the best part of school is being with friends, sharing space, playing on the playground and learning together,” the statement read. “Close contact makes it easy for contagious diseases to spread quickly. That’s why many schools require routine child immunizations” ...

The Florida Education Association shares the sentiment.

In a statement released Wednesday, the FEA said educators’ first responsibility is to keep students safe and provide the best environment to support and educate them ...

4. A win for infectious diseases
Wed Sep 3, 2025, 11:44 PM

Florida is planning to end all vaccination requirements in the state, including requirements for school children to get routine childhood vaccinations that protect them and their communities from severe and life-threatening diseases, such as Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pertussis (whooping cough), diphtheria, measles, tetanus, RSV, and polio ...

"What I'm most excited about is an announcement that we're making now, which is that the Florida Department of Health, in partnership with the governor, is going to be working to end all vaccine mandates in Florida law—all of them, all of them, all of them, every last one of them," Ladapo said ...

... Since becoming the secretary of health and human services, Kennedy has worked relentlessly to disparage vaccines, spread misinformation about them, and dismantle access and federal recommendations for them.

This year has also seen the largest measles outbreak since the highly infectious virus was declared eliminated from the country in 2000. The US case total for this year has reached a 33-year high, and two otherwise-healthy school-aged children died from the infection in Texas ...

5. The Republican plan to raise test scores while spending less and boosting the economy!
Wed Sep 3, 2025, 11:52 PM

Prefentially kill off kids whose parents are too stupid or too crazy to get them vaccinated! As bad genes are weeded out, educational test scores will rise. And as school enrollments decrease, taxpayers save money. Meanwhile, increased spending for emergency room visits and funeral arrangements leads to a new golden age in America!

unethical for that state's level of madness to be allowed to endanger the lives of people in others, particularly those of us who still believe in fucking science.

I believe 80% will continue most vaccines, but I don’t think there is much we can do for other 20% who are stupid beyond belief and don’t care about other people.

Kids also hate them. That's another reason parents don't immunize their kids.

Heck, I didn't get my Covid booster for a year and I finally got my shingles shot last Friday! I had been putting it off for a decade because I've had shingles before and was afraid the vaccine would give me shingles.

And who knows what will happen in pediatrician's offices etc?

Imagine babies not getting any of their vaccinations....
