The ins and outs of how power operates can be one of the most confusing, and most impactful, facets of our society -- our next Solidarity in Action speaker series event will dive into the details of how and why. Join us with special guest Tim Wise for Understanding Systemic Oppression and Privilege on Monday, October 20, at 7pm ET/4pm PT.

Solidarity in Action Understanding Systemic Oppression and Privilege Monday, October 20, at 7pm ET

***Note: This session is required for any groups applying for the Solidarity in Action Fund.***

Our society is built upon a set of unwritten rules that govern what is seen as acceptable and who is valued. Those rules are put in place by the people, communities, organizations, and more that hold power. But if the rules are (often) unwritten, how do they wield that power?

On this call, Tim Wise will walk us through how power operates in society, shapes injustices, and creates disparities and what it means to recognize those systemic power structures and analyze their impact on marginalized communities.

For some help with context, you can read Tim Wise’s Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America (bookshop.org) and/or watch The Great White Hoax: Donald Trump & the Politics of Race & Class in America (streaming rental. $5 or more is requested)

It might be available at your library or school. See the link above for details. I have privacy concerns, transmitting logins through a third party site.

Tim Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States. He is the author of nine books, including his latest essay collection, Dispatches from the Race War, and his highly acclaimed memoir, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son.
