He said that Machado called him to tell him that she was accepting the Nobel Peace Price in honor or because of Trump. He made it sound like he's been helping her along.
Is this a whopper? Or is there truth to this?

I think the original purpose of the press release was a deal with a pharmaceutical. He rambled on about various topics. He brought up that comment regarding the call from the Nobel Prize winner on his own, and no one challenged him.
