So another coming out day (and pride in Wake Forest)
Being a teacher is somewhat unique in terms of coming out since the kids come and go. I have been at my current school for ever a decade, so most of the fellow teachers have known since I advice the Pride Alliance and am known to be in a gay men's chorus. But the students switch year to year. But even then since I have taught nearly all seniors in recent years many of them would know coming in so it wasn't a real shock if they found out during the year. But this year, I have two classes of 9th graders for the first time in several years.
I came out to both of them. In both cases, I was directly asked and answered. We have a permission slip system for our clubs so I have them hanging on my door and it isn't an insane question to ask when they found out I advice that club. The second class was kind of hilarious. Kid asks me, I answer, and he just sputters. It has been quite some time since I have seen a kid shocked that much that he got an honest answer.
Wake Forest is supposed to have some protestors. I teach in eastern NC so good luck with that. I intend to enjoy coming out day.
