Breaking: Cond Nast Traveler ranks Chicago best city

Last edited Sat Oct 11, 2025, 05:53 PM - Edit history (1)

Condé Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards ranks Chicago best city in the US for the 9th year in a row.

So I guess not such a war zone.

Whenever I rank San Francisco higher it's because San Francisco is a lot closer by distance and family.

I was amazed at the quality, variety and low prices of their restaurants, places that may or may not still exist, like The Eclectic, The Mexican Hat Dance, and the castle-like Excaliber, where I mustered the Dutch courage to perform karaoke ("In the Year 2525" ) on a huge stage before a diverse and generous crowd. It seemed to me that the Chicago cityscape was just as sophisticated and aspirational as New York but with less crowded sidewalks.

but Boston is the only place that ever really felt like home to me.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I still love New Mexico. It's just not home like Boston was.

My mom grew up in Hinsdale. Even though I've only visited Chicago a few times as an adult, my mom's love of the city was communicated loud and clear throughout my life.

And the pictures of my sister and I on the beach as toddlers in the late 50's early 60's are pretty great too.
