1. Retrospectively weird. I assume that this was part of some kind of backlash against the "British Invasion" of the.....

.......early sixties. The dudes who had earlier been Elvis or, even earlier, Sinatra wannabes, were trying to be relevant and resorted red, white and blue patriotism. Country Music did it better (?) and by the late sixties and the counterculture, even Elvis was singing about things "In the Ghetto". Weird, like I said.
