Yes, parents can and should monitor what their kids read, but most of these objections are nonsense.
I will add that I paid a lot of attention to what my kids read, and I do recall one of them telling me in 7th grade that he didn't think I'd approve of the book they were reading. Can't recall the specific book, but I read it and saw no problems.

another female child character, holding her hand, "wondering if she likes me", etc.
Ya know, hardcore stuff
