Illinois law requires all registered vehicles to display front and back license plates, without exception. But to evade accountability, masked federal immigration agents are driving around in unmarked cars without plates.

(1,661 posts)If there is a vehicle driving illegally, they can absolutely make a traffic stop. There may be some Federal law that would preclude an arrest. I don't know about that. But I bet they could impound the vehicles for sure. Let the ICE bastards call Uber.

(1,661 posts)Once you start arresting ICE, it is on, so they will want to make sure they are 100% on solid legal footing. They last thing we need is a court ruling that the Gestapo are good to operate completely out of control.

(533 posts)If they drive around without plates, then all of us drive around without plates. We all wear sunglasses and balaclavas.

Or slap an Apple Air Tag on the vehicle to track it.
You can buy GPS tracking devices for under 20 bucks all day long

Maybe it's a stretch, but it's the kind of thing that's believable now.

(53,366 posts)ICE "agents" are wholly anonymous. No badges. No numbers. No license plates.
If I were wrestled to the ground and shoved into an unmarked vehicle and thrown into a detention center despite lack of probable cause and sustained an injury, I couldn't sue as I wouldn't be able to identify one or more plaintiffs.

(149,924 posts)In the 1970s, I worked for a while as a mechanic in a fleet garage for a county in California. Among the vehicles I regularly worked on were the "undercover" cars used by the Sheriff's Department. Mostly, they were assorted cars seized by the Sheriff for being used in some crime. So, they got used by the drug enforcement and other undercover operations.
But, the Sheriff's Department was incredibly stupid about this. They put official license plates on them - the same type used on other county vehicles. And then, they had the garage install new tires on them - the same black sidewall tires we installed on the sheriff's other vehicles. So, you'd see some beat-up Ford Econoline Van coming, with government tax-free license plates and brand new black sidewall tires. "Cheese it - The Cops!" Truly!
