That is what is happening right now with healthcare for over 40 million Americans. Trump and the Republicans want to end "Obamacare" and the subsidies it provides to millions of Americans. And they do not want to negotiate or talk about it. It is their way or the highway. For years, they have preached that "compromise" is a dirty word. That is why the government is shut down right now.
Democrats have no other power than to say we don't agree with the way you are treating the American people and we cannot go along with your plan. We need to sit down and see if we can come up with a solution. But Trump has said, "No Compromise!". And MAGA Mike has sent all his people home and there is no Congress in Washington. And they are still getting paid.
Maybe someday they will realize that this is a large and diverse country with many different needs and that compromise is a necessity for our democracy to work? If they are too stubborn or brain-dead to realize that, then why are they in charge of every branch of government??

(53,021 posts)If it were about the budget, there would have been across-the-board cuts in my view. -7% on everything. Democrats would have agreed. But we are in all-or-none territory. Obliteration and restructuring is in progress. We have no choice but to hunker down. The public will be late to the game to cut their spending to protect what they can for themselves. They think it's all coming back, that a rising tide will lift all boats.

Maybe not, trump got reelected despite his performance. Maybe it is God's will and God hates America.

(30,321 posts)Social Security is self funded it doesn't add one nickel to the deficit.
Also, cuts are being made to Social Security, the age to receive 100% benefits is being raised.
The 2.8% COLA was pathetic. The average increase is $56 which will be cut 40% by a $21.50 increase in Part B Medicare premiums.
The SS Trust fund is expected to not be able to pay out full benefits in 2033 unless something is done.
