John Oliver is worth watching, at least till they shut him down too.

(40,110 posts)I quit television news and opinion a decade before. ( My wife has never been interested in television news and opinion. )
We don't have cable, satellite, or broadcast television.
In general I also boycott nearly all of the products advertised on television -- new cars, questionable pharmaceuticals, overly expensive insurance, sketchy financial products, unhealthy foods, the Republican Party, etc....
What's my power over CBS except to encourage others to boycott them too?
That doesn't seem enough. I want them gone. Extinct.
In my personal universe they are.

(40,110 posts)... which shows you how long ago it was.
Neither the phone company or Comcast offered residential internet service back then.
And we probably needed the money for food.
Comcast made it very difficult to quit, especially by phone. I ended up driving to their local office and confronting a supervisor directly. After rejecting multiple hard-sell "special offers" I may have threatened to winch the cable connecting our home to their system out of the ground and remove it from our property.
Understanding I was serious, they canceled my outstanding balance from when I'd first tried to quit by phone (document, document, document...) leaving me with a positive balance of thirty some-odd cents. I think they recorded my reason for quitting as "moved" because sure enough a few days later Comcast sales people came to our front door offering special "move-in" deals and I got calls from them for about a year offering to reconnect me in my "new" home even after I told them to stop calling.
My wife and I only watched DVDs for a few years until one of our kids, who was home from college, set us up with Netflix. Since then we've usually subscribed to two or three no-advertising streaming services at any given time, most consistently Netflix, budgeting about $35 a month for television. Most of the money we "save" by not having cable we probably spend on books.
How are you set up for internet? I'm glad I don't have to choose between AT&T and Comcast. I also think internet service ought to be free for low income people because it's becoming nearly essential to have an internet connection to be fully functional in modern society.

(344 posts)There is so much to be alarmed about. Theres no way decreasing diversity of your news-team improves your product unless your product is propaganda designed to quiet the voices of the marginalized. Even if we take the midterms then get back the White House, its going to be a tough road to get back to even 2024 levels of bias in the media and diverse representation across government and market sectors. Right now Id be satisfied with making America Ok again.

(3,804 posts)the days of Walter Cronkite "and that's the way it is!"
NOW it seems they want to replace all their news anchors with 'former Fox News' personalities ???
GOODBYE CBS! May your former news dominance rest in peace...
FakeNoose
(39,194 posts)It's upsetting to see this happening right before my eyes. But it's important to rationally accept that CBS has gone over to the dark side. If I continue to cling to old loyalties, even when all the evidence shows they don't deserve my loyalty anymore, then I'm just as lost as the MAGA-cult.

(27,743 posts)Sevareid, Cronkite, Murrow, Douglas Edwards, all those terrific reporters on CBS Evening News, even their Sports people who participated in the News Department like Jack Whitaker and Heywood Hale Broun. My mom knew Whitaker from his early years in Philly. Brilliant guy she said.

(10,662 posts)Could be wrong, but I am guessing that Barri Weiss will not be in her position at CBS for long. Her arrogance is matched only by her inexperience and I think that CBS will be bleeding viewers shortly.

Marie Marie
(10,662 posts)eventually some one's head will roll and it seems like networks go through news directors like Trump through McDonald's. They may even replace her with another person with an aim towards conservative bias but someone is always a scapegoat for decisions that may come from higher ups and Ms Weiss may end up being collateral damage. And again, she is completely inexperienced in television.

(30,695 posts)Boycotting their advertising partners is the way to have influence. The Power of the Purse is all we have and it's not insignificant. That's why the general strike strategy is invaluable. ❤️

(4,497 posts)my own thinking is a GS will have to take a longer view. A one time thing would be a shot across the bow and possibly, possibly be enough. However something like a once a month strike would be more effective. Must hit em where they live, the outcome should be felt by us all. To be successful we would need to get by with less over time. Practical and Punitive.

(40,382 posts)I made 10 pies. I did it three years in a row. I got more thank-you's for those pies than anything I've ever given! I spent a weekend mixing & rolling out pie crusts & every night I'd bake two pies & the next weekend I'd deliver them. The hardest part was not eating them!

(12,192 posts)In the rhetoric for their "anti-DEI" propaganda, they give lip service to the existence of "Longstanding Federal civil-rights laws protect individual Americans from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin." They flat out lie that they are only targeting their imagined "illegal discrimination" against whites.
I don't see how blanket firing of all non-whites could be defended by this DOJ.
Of course, we would have to have a functional civil-rights division and EOC. Someone should still refer it for action and then sue the DOJ for failing to act.
