Waldport Oregon says "NOPE" to ICE, following strong protests in neighboring town, Newport

You may recall seeing Rachel Maddow's story about Newport, Oregon's resistance to a planned ICE facility on the central Oregon coast. (My town).

This week, Waldport - the town just south of Newport -- went on red alert when it was discovered that ICE was trying to contract to rent out an older, rundown resort to house ICE agents. Within hours, hundreds of people sent emails to Waldport City Council against ICE, and a city council meeting was held to address concerns. For now, the plans are on hold, but not fully decided yet.

And MAGA would love to fill more seats on Councils, School Boards, and other seemingly low-level elected positions.

In my county, Santa Cruz, council members sit on county boards and can sway the direction of major regional projects, like public transit and housing policies and investments.

Thank your council member, consider running, and become as active civically as possible.

Great post, thanks!

One of the advantages of a small town is that the wheels of power are close to the ground. We are a fairly economically depressed region, so any threat to meager livelihoods and our neighbors would be felt acutely. To have thugs running around mugging people in a small town would be devastating to the trust and security we are used to.

It would be really stupid for any hotel/resort to accommodate ICE since so many immigrants here work in hospitality and food services. If they weren't here, there aren't enough young people to fill those jobs.

I suspect that higher income cities like Santa Cruz might have more of a haves/have nots/political divide to exploit.

Mrs. Canon and I are going to protest in Florence today and others are going to Newport. We don't want our city council to think we are vulnerable.

I lived in Florence before Newport. I cannot imagine the impact of having people in the community mugging and abducting others off the streets of any of our little towns. It would be so destructive to us socially, economically, and psychologically.

Fortunately, we have a bunch of old hippies who won't go down easily.

Saying they will be in Newport on Dec 16th. Supposedly from Rep Gomberg. Did you hear anything about it? I'm on his mailing list and knew it was still somewhat unclear, but have heard nothing concrete. The OP on Reddit said they will be using portapotties and tents.

"I resent your stations assumption that we are all in step with hating this Administration and our president. Many of us respect ICE deputies and Federal Marshals."

Literal dog shit is more worthy of respect than ICE.
