Medicare. Now what?

Just read where a new layer of verification will be added to access Medicare accounts. Anyone ever use ID.me or Clear? I’m not that tech savvy and don’t look forward to figuring out yet another hoop to access my account. Comments?

1. 20% of login time now goes to 2-factor authorization or independent verification.

I agree it's a pain in the butt, also known as PITA. I am so confused. And I have rejected authentication sites because they are so sparse I thought they were hackers or spammers. I'm not sure that's going over well, with them of course.

Seems as though they are looking to do away with requirements for multi-factor authentication.

HHS’ tech office proposes to gut and reset health IT policy

The health IT arm at the Department of Health and Human Services released a rule that proposes to gut its certification program for health information technology, rolling back years of requirements for developers.

The health IT arm at the Department of Health and Human Services released a rule that proposes to gut its certification program for health information technology, rolling back years of requirements for developers.

The deregulatory rule is an explicit effort to carry out President Donald Trump’s executive order (EO) 14192 "Unleashing Prosperity Through Deregulation."

=====

Some of the other requirements the office proposes to remove are family health history, audit reports, multi-factor authentication, safety-enhanced design and accessibility-centered design. The proposed rule says the requirements “are no longer necessary to advance interoperability and no longer provide a strong market driver for initial adoption and implementation of the certified functionalities.”

I’ve been using ID.me for Social Security and VA for awhile now and it’s not that difficult to setup or use.

Here are the instructions for SSA - once you create the account you can use it for other government sites.

5. Does this mean login.gov will be retired?

Login.gov has been working really well for me.

I do not, nor will I, use my phone to interface with my hospital, Medicare, Soc Security, my variable annuity, etc, etc.

Login.gov is a government service while ID.me is a third-party service but you can use either one for most government services for the time being. Don’t know what future plans are.

Just don't lose your phone and/or make sure you transfer your phone number to your new phone.

Who can act on your behalf (If they let you). You cannot create an account for someone else.

9. Once you get it set up, it works reasonably well

There's a bunch of authentication hoops to jump through, but they're finite and the login service itself works adequately, although 2-factor auths do take a bit longer.
