To those who support the new voting ID the GOP support and just voted on in the House, think about how it will affect women and their ability to vote.
To get a birth certificate costs at least $30. If you married and your name is different than your birth name, you have to pay to get a copy of your marriage license which could cost up to $5o if it's available which sometimes it isn't. If you are on your second or third marriage, you will need all copies of marriage and divorce papers which will cost more. Manywomen can't afford this, and this bill affects women more than men due to only women changing their names for the most part.
This bill is a very expensive poll tax in another name and an attempt to make it much more difficult for women to vote, which is the goal of the GOP as stated by many in power.

(12,568 posts)In small towns people are known to the poll workers. Will a 90 year old known in town without a drivers license be denied voting? Married woman with name changes?
It will hit both sides but some discretion to local personal knowledge of a voter should be enough to vote.

He is not the same man I donated to. I think his stroke affected his personality and cognition...and not for the better.

(5,166 posts)something called the Conversation his answers to the interviewer's questions were basically incoherent. When she sought clarification his answers still didn't make sense. I think you're right that his stroke affected his rationality and ability to speak without wandering away from his subject. His cognitive issues seemed to me to be almost as bad as tsf's.
I feel sad for him about his illness, but it's too bad he can't be replaced with another Democrat before 2028.

The stroke clearly changed him. I've seen others become an entirely different person after a stroke.

Imagine how betrayed I felt. So glad she's gone. She's dead to me now.

(54,622 posts)will opt to retain their "maiden names" for that purpose. I'm not talking hyphens. I mean birth name until death. And unfortunately in our culture, a lot of husbands won't be thrilled that their wives and children won't be monikered with THEIR names.

(1,930 posts)has known about this for a month or two. And is telling all her FEMALE friends what they need to do to retain the right to vote.
99% of them have been voting using their married name, and not their maiden name.........
She is also worried about these assholes checking "how they signed their name when they FIRST registered", and intentionally signing it the same way on ballots. No one signs their name the same as they did years or decades ago, and if "they" check the two, "they"can throw out all the ballots that are signed the current way your name...............
Putin always wins 85+% of the vote in Russia, and I am more than sure he is showing the Republicans all the Corrupt ways he does that, to get all those landslides of votes...

(9,426 posts)He has voted with Democrats an overwhelming amount of the time and there are numerous Democrats who have voted with Republicans more often. He is nowhere close to Manchin who held up things getting passed. Fetterman has never blocked a Democratic Priority from passing.

(17,558 posts)this bill already been approved in the senate?
Wiz Imp
(9,426 posts)It passed the House for the 3rd or 4th time but that is irrelevant. It will NEVER pass the Senate.
Rebl2
(17,558 posts)I have to ask you why though. Are they afraid of losing votes from republican women?
Wiz Imp
(9,426 posts)And Murkowski has already said she will vote against it. That means they need at least 8 Democrats to vote for it . No chance of that happening. The Republicans have been trying to pass this for a decade. Until they get 60 Senators or abolish the filibuster, it will continue to die there as it has for the past decade.

(9,426 posts)If you really believe that there there is no point in singling out Fetterman. In reality there is no chance 8 Democrats vote for it. Republicans have been trying to pass this for a decade and it always dies in the Senate because it will NEVER get 60 votes there. The only way for it to pass is to abolish the filibuster which Republicans will not do at this time.
Last year it got 4 Democratic votes in the House and still never even got a vote in the Senate.
Even Fetterman (who has not supported it but is accused of supporting it) believes it has no chance of passing.

(28,831 posts)He asked the Senator if he supported the SAVE Act which Karl said "was supported by 80% of American voters" and I'm thinking, what? did he just pull that out of his ass.
Schiff held his ground and kept stating the Act was a deterrence from voting..
Karl again tried the 80% crap, but backed off..
Schiff is smarter. He's a gem!

(9,426 posts)In an interview with the Post-Gazette, he stressed that he did not say that he would support the bill, which is an expansive effort to require proof of citizenship during voter registration and photo ID during voting, limit registration by mail and purge voter rolls more frequently, among other measures.
Fetterman said the changes to curtail mail-in registration were "a nonstarter" for him. Even if he were to vote for the bill, he said, it's almost certain to die in the Senate because it won't win the necessary 60 votes.

(581 posts)In his defense, however, I do have to applaud his consistent support for two areas of advocacy that are important to me - environmental policy and animal welfare policy. His League of Conservation Voters score is 90% lifetime and 100% for 2024 while his Humane World (formerly the Humane Society of the United States) score is 100% for 2025. In contrast, my other senator, Dave McCormack, has a 0% rating.
