to take us into war in Iraq? Deja vu. Remember the Cheney claims about nukes? The phony "yellow cake" claims? Remember how they went after Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame? Remember how they went after media figures, like Phil Donahue, who dared to question the lies? Remember how cowardly the rest of the media was and how they were complicit in cheering on a phony justification for war?Remember the embarrassing dog and pony show, with props, of Colin Powell? Remember when they said it would be over quickly and the troops would be home? Remember the phony scramble and lies about WMD and all the made up stories when none were found?
Here we are again. Last time was 4,000 dead American soldiers plus many more thousands of wounded. All for ego about "Daddy", lies and the itch of neocons to kill and of course oil. Remember the crooked "rebuilding authority"? Remember the war crimes and torture? Remember how many billions and billions of dollars it cost instead of spending that money to feed the poor, educate children and pay for health care? Remember how they did all of that while letting banks and Wall Street run wild with schemes and corruption until it collapsed the economy so bad that 2 out of the big 3 car companies had to file for bankruptcy and get huge government bailouts?
Remember how the big shots got tons of taxpayer money and literally almost nobody was held to account? Remember how long it took until it got pieced back together after millions of foreclosures, bankruptcies, suicides from despair and broken families? Remember how the big shots promised it wouldn't happen again? Remember how people believed them? Remember after the mess of Iraq how the big shots and media went around saying it was a horrible mistake and they wouldn't let it happen again? Remember how people believed them?
Here's an article from 2023 for our memories from "Mother Jones" on the 20th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

(3,504 posts)Name of the law
Full name: DoddFrank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (often just Dodd‑Frank).
Final conference report (the version that became law)
House Conference report on H.R. 4173
Date: June 30, 2010.
Total: 237192 in favor.
By party:
Democrats: 219 Yes, 27 No.
Republicans: 3 Yes, 165 No.
Senate Conference report on H.R. 4173
Date: July 15, 2010.
Total: 6039 in favor (exactly the number needed to defeat a filibuster).
By party:
Democrats + Independents: 57 Yes, 1 No (Feingold).
Republicans: 3 Yes (Snowe, Collins, Brown), 38 No.
So in both chambers, Dodd‑Frank passed with overwhelming Democratic support and minimal Republican support, especially in the House where the GOP was almost uniformly opposed

The only reason that shit hasn't happened again SINCE then is because DEMOCRATS did the right thing and crafted safeguards. The GOP shitheads fought against safeguards, and the American people, and FOR the billionaires and banks.

(2,883 posts)I remember very well.
As dark and horrific as that all way...look at all the ways they curated the message. There was an all out affront to give it a veneer of legitimacy through the manipulations. There was the run-up, the sales job, we knew when it was to begin. They had the horror of 9-11 to gin up enlistments.
I thought the darkest day in my life time came when congress voted to authorize the invasion.
This is different, IMO. There was no effort to sell it. They made no case (true or false). There seems to be little concern about justifying it in any way. There is no attempt to unify. No attempt to sell (not a genuine anyway).
I'm still way confused about Venezuela and what we are doing there. I can't believe we continue to blow up boats with a collective ho-hum.
I can't understand why there isn't screams for impeachment from every member of congress. Why people aren't streaming into the streets with the blessing and encouragement of the businesses. So much I don't understand.
