From Selma to Harlem, Activists Launch Massive 'Freedom Summer' Juneteenth Surge After SCOTUS Gutted Voting Rights
A national coalition of civil rights, faith, labor, youth and community organizations have announced the next phase of its sweeping Freedom Summer/Freedom Fall 2026 campaign following the historic All Roads Lead to the South National Day of Action in Alabama.
The coalition revealed plans Wednesday (May 28) for a nationwide Juneteenth Week of Action beginning with events in Atlanta on June 17, a June 20 rally in Harlem, New York and additional events to be announced as organizers intensify a growing national movement centered on Black political power, voting rights, economic justice and civic engagement ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Organizers describe the campaign as a continuation of the unfinished work of the Civil Rights Movement, rooted in the legacy of the 1964 Freedom Summer, while responding to what they call escalating attacks on Black communities and democratic participation nationwide.
We know that the originators are the architects of the Freedom Summer, depended on a deep moral rebuke and critique against the forces of racism and segregation, and we are reclaiming and recommitting ourselves to a very similar commitment to fuel our current Freedom Summer, Pastor Mike McBride, one of the organizers of the Freedom Summer movement, told The Root.
Additional actions in cities across the country are expected to be announced in the coming days. .................(more)
