All the articles about how they "misread the room" is besides the point. It is about the intellectual property from Paramont/CBS and just like Bezos and the Wash Post, it is about appeasing Trump for lucrative Government contracts.
They simply don't care about ratings, they don't care about ruining CBS, they care about greenbacks.

Murdoch and Ellison were never in it for profits or Pulitzers.

(37,543 posts)I have seen at two or three articles posted about the News and Late Night on how they misread the audience. They didn't, they are doing this for an audience of 1 and they read him just right.

(4,160 posts)When Bezos bought the Washington Post group, he was doing so to get his hands on Kaplan College, the for profit college that was owned by the WPG that was pulling in money hand over fist. They were engaging in many of the same predatory tactics that for-profit colleges were at the time prior to and into the beginning of the great recession.
To get that asset, he was willing to take on the Washington Post and Kaplan Test Prep.
They were trying to sell off the newspaper because it was the weakest part of the portfolio. They altered how Kaplan Test Prep operated, closing a lot of storefronts and trying to shift to online delivery with both synchronous and asycnhronous delivery.
I worked for Kaplan Test Prep as a side job when it happened. Was worried about what it would do to my supplemental income. We kept being told that they were gonf to sell off the paper, but no one would buy it for what Bezos was willing to let it go for.
Now it is part of his propaganda machine.
But that is only because other investors refused to put money into traditional newspapers. This is one of those butterfly effect moments for me -- greed to go from billionaire towards trillionaire by preying on people using for profit colleges. But ended up having a propaganda machine to push policies that help billionaires become trillionaires with what he thought was the scraps to sell off. The entrails ended up being the main dish of that acquisition.

(3,433 posts)Much of the "news" is simply a loss leader for billionaires. Yet some here still seem to think that a media company
spreading lies and losing ad dollars will go out of business because ya know..profit and loss. Doesn't work like that
anymore.

(12,770 posts)Ever since Naziferatu Miller and Elon complained about the new "woke" Starfleet Academy show, there was a concerted effort by conservatives to get it cancelled. Most of them claimed that they only watched one episode and then trashed it. However, there were several obvious bots who kept claiming the same things. Of course, they focused on "bad writing" and specific characters that they didn't like. There was even a rumor put out that Shatner met with the executive in charge and said that he wouldn't do any appearances for the 60th anniversary unless they got rid of "that woke shit." He has come out and said that this was a lie, and he supported SFA.
So, you have to wonder, why are they trashing Paramount's most valuable franchise right at the moment that it's celebrating it's 60th anniversary? Were they trying to devalue the stock to make it cheaper? Or are they putting in a "non-woke" agenda on their entertainment programming, too?

CBS is one of 1000's of channels now betwixt broadcast and internet, my guess CBS could go the way of the Dodo bird and the Ellisons would not blink an eye.
The corruption we are seeing rivals that of russia. Heck of a job john roberts.

(114,722 posts)His financial guys said it was a good buy since their latest lurch to the lunatic right had weakened them and lowered the price of their stock and it would make a nice addition to his portfolio. If Ellison thought anything, he thought it would make a nice media platform for his own lunacy.
