Though President Trump declared on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen and be permanently toll-free, Iran indicated on Monday that it intended to charge fees for unspecified services in the strait, the New York Times reports.
The net effect paying for passage through the vital waterway for global energy supplies, which was not required before the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran could add expense and complications for commercial shipping in the waterway, and set a dangerous precedent for shipping in international waters worldwide.

(5,374 posts)but Russia would probably veto it.
The UN is not the World Police. It can facilitate negotiations but its not going to prevent Iran from charging fees. And neither, apparently, is the Trump Administration. This is the consequence of electing an idiot as President.
How many times has Trump threatened to completely destroy Iran over the last several weeks and then totally backed down? Ive lost count. But in the process the US has lost all credibility as a threat to force Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz. Trumps brain knows only one tactic (badly); he is not a strategic thinker. His tactic is to issue threats to get what he wants because he doesnt have a concept of the win-win scenario. Plus he seems to think only in two week increments. If a doctor told him he had three weeks to live he would think that was an eternity.
