Former House Speaker McCorquodale dies at age 96

MONTGOMERY — Former Alabama House Speaker Joseph C. McCorquodale (D) has died.

The governor’s office and House of Representatives announced the death this week. He died Monday at the age of 96.

McCorquodale, a native of Clarke County, was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives for 24 years. He was House speaker from 1975 to 1983.

McCorquodale ran for governor in 1982 but lost to George C. Wallace.
