Provisional ballots to decide outcome of runoff election for Alabaster City Council seat

ALABASTER, Ala. (WIAT) — Several provisional ballots could determine the outcome of the runoff election for Ward 1 City Council seat in Alabaster. This after City Council President and Ward 1 City Council member Sophie Martin decided not to seek re-election in August after serving 17 years on the council.

Municipal election results for Alabaster’s Ward 1 City Council seat show Mike Myers ahead with 261 votes to candidate Gerry J. Bivins 259 votes. Several provisional votes will now determine the outcome of that race.

Alabaster City Clerk Mark Frey said the Board of Registrars has determined that all three provisional votes cast on Tuesday will count, so there will be a clear winner on Monday night. That’s when the Alabaster City Council will meet to canvass election results.

“They will be presented an envelope with all of the totals from yesterday’s election,” Frey explained. “And they will review those totals and then add to any provisional ballots that have been determined that they should count.”
