Schumer says he plans to support the GOP funding bill, lowering odds of a shutdown
Source: Washington Post
For sure the Republicans bill is a terrible option, but I believe allowing Donald Trump to take
much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option.

(5,407 posts)but it is the truth that, for the most part, people get a bit more conservative as they age. By that, I don't mean they lean into the Conservative party or repubs. The fact the largest group polled before the last election who supported Kamala was seniors should show that we're not all fox heads.
But we're not as prone to taking risks with the important things in our lives... like our family, our job, etc. I'm sorry to say that Schumer needs to go... and go right now... and allow some fresh, risk-taking blood to stand tall in his place. Schumer is too old for that position. It used to be statesmen who reached that age and rank were rewarded because of their intelligence and wisdom based on years in the party. Schumer missed a step or 3, IMO.
I'm not saying throw out everyone 50+ years old... I AM saying those in their 70's... and even in their 60's depending on their health and mental status... need to think whether they're doing more good than bad in staying. Our country is more important than their next paycheck or medal.
I'll admit, at 69, there's no way I could do half the job that needs to be done in those positions. But then there's Bernie. We're killing Bernie Sanders because he won't stop screaming and working for the rest of us. He puts everything he has into it, and he believes in what he's doing. If Bernie were only 30 years younger or so, he'd be unstoppable today. I worry about him... the pace he's going can't be good for him. But Goddess bless him for what he's trying to do for us.
Intelligence is necessary and good in politics. FIRE in the belly is even better.

(618 posts)Obviously, Schumer, Durbin, and the DNC were afraid that the party's wealthy donors would withold their money in the event of a government shutdown. In the meantime, ordinary, vulnerable Americans will be forced to take poison for the next six months because of a C R that our party's leadership is too cowardly to block. if the Democrats won't fight for us now, who else will?

(5,407 posts)this one featuring Kamala's voice and pleading for us to become members and support them with a recurring payment. To which I say, "No way." They're giving in to defeat before they even try to push back. They never even asked for a recount from a swing state. Until the party as a whole starts winning our country back with us, no one's going to get a red cent from me... and that's not too hard to do, since hamburger is the price steaks once were and steaks are out of any idea of consumption. $159.00 for a roast? Give me a freaking break. Chicken priced just as high as hamburger and milk worthy of a couple of hours work pay? And the democrats are going to vote "yes" on the CR? They just lost me and any pennies I might have had left after a trip to the grocery store.
Show me what you're worth, and I'll give you more than I can reasonably afford. Side with Republicans, and try to get your support money from magats. I'm p'o'd. Just came back from the store. NOT in a good mood to go easy on all those who are easing the way for our autocratic rulers. And I dearly hope that the democrats doing the town halls in republican cities/states hear from US as well as the repugs. they need to assess whose side they want to be on... theirs or ours.

(493 posts)Trump would use this to justify his demolishing of our democracy. The one thing Trump is good at is conning and manipulating and this would be just the ammunition he would need to distract the public from what a disaster he is. He would endlessly scream how the Democrats are wanting to destroy our nation and the gullible public along with the cooperation of the media (controlled by the wealthy elite) would eat it up. Let the Orange Turd continue to dig his own grave without anyone to blame but himself.

(526 posts)earlier today and read a few posts that were of the "Dems were standing strong" variety. I thought about responding but decided it wasn't worth the effort. I figured by evening Schumer would fold just like always.
While its obvious the Republicans have been engaged in tearing down this country the weakling Dems have their share of blame to accept. Trump is a cancer that has been allowed to metastasize for a decade with next to nothing being done about it. The Dems under Schumer and Pelosi and others have screwed around doing nothing of substance forever. Some of them actually voted FOR Trumps nominees, and worse, see nothing wrong with doing that. All that "my friends across the aisle" bullshit.
I think of it like a game of marbles where the Dems are playing for single individual marbles and patting themselves on the back cause they managed to win one marble here, one marble there. On the other hand the Repukes have been ignoring the rules of the marble game and reaching out and scooping up handfuls of marbles while the Dems stare in shocked consternation and then go right back to playing for one marble here, one marble there as if nothing happened. Meanwhile Trump and the Repukes are running off with the entire field of marbles.
Until we get down and dirty political fighters running this party and its direction we're f**ked.
My wife and I are so disgusted by the feckless BS in the party we now toss the numerous donation solicitations in the shredder recycle bin. Its not like their constituents aren't screaming at them to get their acts together. We are. They're just not doing it and their inaction is as bad as the Republicans actions. Two sides of a pathway to dictatorship.
I love the analogy. I am going to steal it. Ha ha.

(1,492 posts)I am a New Yorker and a Democrat. I told him that I have supported him and voted for him for years, but if he supports voting for this Republican power grab continuing resolution, I will never again vote for him in a primary or general election. History will remember if we capitulate to Trump and his Republican enablers in the Congress, or if we stood up to them. Both situations are difficult, but we are in a difficult situation. We must use what power we have now to stand up to Trump while we still can.

(4,073 posts)Schumer found out in their private meetings that a sufficient number of his colleagues were going to vote against the shutdown by voting for cloture in the CR.
If Schumer calculates the CR is going to pass anyway, his choice became appearing to make an error in judgment, versus appearing too weak to lead the caucus. Bad judgment doesn't get him quickly removed as Senate Democratic Leader. It buys HIM time because his next election isn't until 2028.
Here's how I see the ethical dilemma - his choice was what he thought was best, Chuck Schumer over what's best for the country.
And no, I also don't believe his colleagues will immediately remove him from leadership because. Not because they shouldn't, but because of the optics and how they would reflect us in complete disarray.

(8,713 posts)Nope...NOW he knows your a pawn he can use like he uses everyone and then tosses them aside. Let me guess..on the next round of these BS CR's Medicare or SS will be on the block for massive cuts but Chucky will vote again with Trump and Republicans to keep Gov open.
Where is the FUCKING line in the sand Schumer??
