In remarkable split, Nancy Pelosi slams Chuck Schumer over budget deal
Source: San Francisco Chronical
WASHINGTON In a rare moment of public disagreement with members of her own party, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi called out Senate Democrats on Friday for supporting Republicans government funding extension.
The Senate was expected to vote Friday on a seven-month funding extension to keep the government open. The current funding expires at midnight. The funding resolution would increase defense spending by $6 billion, decrease non-defense funding by $13 billion, provide nearly $10 billion in funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and discontinue $890 million in grants for health facilities and $293 million for emergency preparedness projects, changes from existing funding many Democrats oppose.
Infighting over the government funding extension has reached the highest levels of the Democratic Party, with leadership on both sides of the Capitol trading respectful but pointed barbs over the past few days. At stake is preventing a shutdown, but many Democrats argue there are bigger-picture reasons to vote against the legislation: preventing the demolition of government services and ensuring they have a say in future spending bills.
Pelosi said Democrats shouldnt play into President Donald Trumps hands.

(143 posts)It essentially gives the President (Muskrat) the power of sequestration. They can legally now zero out agencies as opposed to the illegal actions they have been taken. Expect large scale RIFs next week and office closures as their budget is zeroed out.
Even DC government is at risk.

(143 posts)Would allow it. Why would the courts step in on what the Congress (foolishly) passed as law. Sequestration is a real thing.

(28,083 posts)It isn't worse than a shutdown followed by a new filibuster vote a week later with more defections... followed by another and another... until the CR eventually passes and Democrats get blamed for a shutdown (and economic numbers that were going to happen anyway) and lose in the end anyway
