'Don't you all have jobs?' JD Vance mocks Americans protesting Social Security cuts

Source: Raw Story

March 14, 2025 9:00PM ET

Vice President JD Vance recently traveled to Bay City, Michigan to speak at a manufacturing plant to tout President Donald Trump's economic agenda, and was welcomed by a crowd of protesters.

But once he was inside the event at Vantage Plastics, Vance ridiculed the protesters — many of whom carried signs bearing messages like "protect Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security" and "fascists not welcome in Michigan" — and suggested that they were only protesting him because they didn't have anything better to do. Some of the protesters' signs were also focused on South African centibillionaire Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk has repeatedly called for cutting Social Security by hundreds of billions of dollars, and recently railed against the New Deal program as a scheme by Democrats to entice undocumented immigrants to get free money and vote for them in elections (undocumented immigrants don't qualify for Social Security benefits and are not able to vote).

"I'm sure all of us saw there were a few protesters outside," Vance said. "And I can't be the only person wondering, you know, it's a cool afternoon, on a Friday, and don't you all have jobs?"

"Oh, I was livid," wrote one Bluesky user who was escorted out of the event. "Like 2nd [shift]? 3rd? Splits? Part-time? Retired? Hypocrite, what about his invite-only crowd?"

Just a cut in medicare would be a hardship.
Managed care will take over with huge deductibles and co-pays.

I have been wondering if the GOP plan is for the older folks to take the jobs of the immigrants
who are being booted out of the country. The menial labor.

But older folks cannot do the hard labor, perhaps the GOP does not care.

It is not just cruelty, it is the fact that the rich think all money in the world belongs to them.
And they do to want that money going to the old, young, infirm. These are useless eaters in the mind of the rich.

So the rich would like to see old people pay their own way.
Does't matter the pensions, IRAs, etc are money we earned.

It is a true addiction.

They have more money than they can ever spend in one lifetime.
It is still not enough.

They will destroy everyone around them getting their money fix.
The money was not enough, they had to go for power, buy the entire US government.

There is no amount of money that can fill up the holes in their souls.

Americans appear to love these addicts.

Nothing is ever enough.

I read a study once where wealthy men were interviewed and asked if they were happy.
Every single one of them said no, they were not happy. All of these men were very rich,
houses, yachts, cars. Every luxury.

But they all said they had to have more money, and could identify exactly how much money they
needed to be finally happy. But the richer men with that amount of money were not happy,
saying they needed more.

It was an eye opener and we can see the additive quality to chasing dollars.

Yes obviously WB is not an addict.

He ended up getting another job but doing that is total crap. He's a vet, now with health issue from agent orange compounded by covid and can't care for himself anymore much less work or attempt to gamble/rely on the unreliable stock market (401K) instead of SS in his elder years. Cheating people of what they've worked for isn't a new story as you all well know. Still pi$$es me off. Have other people who have lost jobs to this decades ago. What Doge is doing is just another form of vulture capitalism imo, kind of like what they are doing to the entirety of the govt.

I'm very protective of my elders. Am a child of older parents and even older grandparents. Have never understood not valuing each individual for whatever experience they have and can share and frankly the wisdom often gained from years of living. Sadly took me a while to figure out that a certain percentage of any population (regardless of age) are just plainly non-caring selfish people who won't ever learn but I still try to be open and find value in whatever knowledge or insight they may have as a human. I like to think that most people have at least one thing that can be construed as valuable (ala Sherrod Brown) and perhaps respecting and talking with them will plant a seed to help them see the light. Know this is a ramble, my brain's tired today and not coming up with quite the right words. I am a blue dot in a red sea. Please don't hold it against me. Thanks.

... of egregious failures chalked up to M$M is their refusal to correct fascists trying to justify Musk's mendacious attack on Social Security by pointing out that Social Security is essentially a closed system, and it doesn't contribute one penny to the deficit, nor will its dissolution reduce the deficit by one penny. The vast majority of the Social Security Trust Fund is deferred wages held in trust. In other words, it's YOUR money, NOT the government's.
But then, Republicans have to lie, because only lies can support and defend their diseased belief system. They are liars and thieves who just want to rob Social Security to line their own pockets, and they get off on hurting people.

To boil it down to it's essence, Liberals get up in the morning and ask, who can I help today? Conservatives get up and ask, who can I punish?

"Liberals get up in the morning and ask, who can I help today? Conservatives get up and ask, who can I punish?"

I know I have been posting that a lot - particularly when it comes to how we spend our money.

The GOP will spend gobs of money buying and staffing loon media outlets that will spew hate and vitriol - which is their "messaging".

Meanwhile Democrats will spend gobs of money on food and land banks (the latter for housing), conservation programs, healthcare initiatives in underserved areas, as well as medical debt reduction efforts, education and job training, etc.

Yet Democrats will quickly revert to the hand-wringing circular firing squad bemoaning "what did we do wrong?" and "where is our messaging?"

for 40 years.
Will Republicans be anxious to run for reelection if they are blamed for stealing the retirement money from millions of their constituents and possibly making them homeless? People who perhaps voted for them and now won't again along with millions of their family members who are unhappy about what has been done to Grandpa and Grandma.
Have these Republicans really thought all of this through completely?

every cent they have and use that money to pay for the ongoing support of SS. It would send a massive signal to these thugs who are obviously chomping at the bit to get their hands onto our SS. I wonder just how successful we would be if we did this, a massive class action lawsuit by every senior in this Country who has earned their SS benefits, against these thugs who are daily threating our SS.

have jobs if we weren't fired for younger replacements! And we could successfully sue for age discrimination.

And hey JD! You seem to have forgotten your proud past of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps by way of help from the Government.

And I guess you skipped reading "A Christmas Carol". Especially this passage:

“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,” said the [one of the gentlemen], taking up a pen, “it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.

“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”

“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “I wish I could say they were not.”

“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?” said Scrooge.

“Both very busy, sir.”

“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to hear it.”

“Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,” returned the gentleman, “a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?”

“Nothing!” Scrooge replied.

“You wish to be anonymous?”

“I wish to be left alone,” said Scrooge. “Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned: they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there.”

“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”

“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

is exactly what mindless conservative glorification and worship of American work culture has gotten us. This is cartoon fascism.

And it's especially ironic/hypocritical when this administration is so deeply in bed with the same fucking people pushing for AI, with no regulations whatsoever.

You don't get to play the old "Do you have jobs" card when you're firing tens of thousands of people every week to pinch pennies and literally trying to automate as much of the national workforce as possible, least of all in a country where most are living paycheck to paycheck. And in addition to all that, at the same time, they're also not in favor of a living UBI and actively want to kill off SS. Modern "conservatism" is a fucking ideological contradiction and nothing more than corporate bootlicking. Something has to fucking give.

He is young, and it is to be supposed, healthy, yet he is 100% clueless about those born with defects and diseases, those defects and diseases created by life, work, and simple bad luck, and those defects and diseases of aging and old age.

It is to his great shame that he, his "boss", and so many of our oligarchic elites are without understanding, sympathy, or empathy for those who have less "luck" than they.
